i play whistle and recently i've noticed that some other players in my ceoltas play what seems like quick rolls on quavers.... i really like this and i think it sounds great and livens up the playing alot.... what do you think??
i cant quite master it but i'm trying, any tips? its so fast that its nearly as if you just tap the lower note and dont cut......
does anyone know???
This is a 'short roll' , in a jig it's easier than in a reel because of the amout of time you have. If it's too fast for you, just tap or cut. Like you say, the difference isn' t that big.
Don't know about all that but I prefer rolls on crisps, plain, not cheese and onion. Quavers tend to melt in your mouth, and go all gooey. If you play the whistle at the same time it will get filled up with quavery lumps, but as noted above, a good tap should dislodge them.
saxwhistle, what you do is the same as a roll ie note cut note tap note except without the note at the start. You play the first note by cutting into it, then tap.
Is the term, quaver roll a bit confusing? Think what you mean are short rolls played in space of a crotchet. Long rolls are played in space of a dotted crotchet etc. Mind you, my knowledge of music notation is a bit dodgy at times
When playing Drowsy Maggie don't you feel it sounds too simple if you don't play a roll on the E crotchet? I don't know if anyone else does this but I've always done it like that, it came naturally to me. Saxwhistle try it with that tune, it will sound better. It kinda becomes two quavers, one is the cut and the other one is the tap.
maybe that's what they're doing - playing a tap or cut or double note cut. I suppose if you posted an .mp3 file, someone here could listen and advise. You can slow these down as well and figure it out by ear at a slower tempo.
Are you sure it wasn't just a cut? I find a roll on a quaver rather impossible and pointless. As someone said can you post an mp3 of it and give us the link?
yeah, really snappy ones right on the beat. Great. Though to say it's pointless kind of misses the point that there's no actual point to any of it. It's all just abstract sounds for the mere fun of it.
Before rashly attempting these extremely quick ornaments, one should remember the laws of physics still apply. According to Einstein, as a roll approaches the speed of a quaver, its length is shortened according to the Lorentz transformation, but at the same time its mass increases to the point where the effort to accelerate it any further requires a huge amount of force. So, while a person might muster the digital dexterity to pull this off, there is the danger of that extra mass being converted to energy as E equals emcee squared, thus causing a thermonukular explosion. This is what happened to the whistle player with Spinal Tap.
Rolls on quavers??

Re: Rolls on quavers??
Wounded Hussar, good correction. A roll on a quaver is impossible, what I meant was a roll on a crotchet.
Now saxwhistle's turn...

Re: Rolls on quavers??
I play a triplet on the E in Drowsy Maggie. Same sort of effect I guess.

Re: Rolls on quavers??
well... i have now mastered it!!
sorry at being so long at getting back to you...
you play a tap on the quaver.....
its like the cuts that you practically have started before you play the note.... only its a tap......
on a whistle its easiest to do on an A
i think
its like your third finger is just falling on the g very quickly....
i would advise though that you dont try this type of ornamentation until you have absolutly mastered rolls on quavers and cratchets.
