I would like to...
Thank Jeremy for his excellent work in continuing this site.
Thank all of the open minded people who are aware that we are all at differing stages of expertise, give sound technical advice, tolerate newbies and the "occassional" wind-up and accept that we all pursue the love and dissemination of Irish traditional music and culture
Brickbats
I would like to...
Kick all of the narrow minded sanctimonious (long-time users and youngbloods) who believe that their overstated opinions and inflated sense of self importance is actually promoting Irish culture. Insults do not win a debate/discussion
If you could take a moment to realise that you MAY have something worthwhile to say instead of bickering and carrying on grudges and bitching about new versus old, grey versus green.
Leave your egos with the log-in...or take them with your hat and coat...please?
Fecksake...people other than posters (some should read "posers") read this board and all this bullcrap makes you look as you should feel.
Please...
Stop all of the negative, personalised, jealous, snipes and smart-arrsed remarks about people you only know from email/have a cd of/have seen on youtube/slept with/wanted to sleep with/couldn't hold a candle to...shaughneen shite.
I get the feeling that if you didn't know who was at the end of the "handle" you would have great craic and music together.
Have a drink and forget about all this and try to ask yourself if you would speak to a friend in the way you are carrying on.
Enuf.
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Well bc, when you see me you may understand
My father was from the 6 counties and I think he got the impression from his da that it meant stage or "put-on" Irish.
Shamrocks and stereotypes galore..."With yer dubeen in yur gob
Not that that doesn't have it's rightful place in our musical lexicon. G'night!
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Thank you for saying what I've been thinking. I don't post often because I am only a dancer and radio host, not a musician. But I check the site daily for interesting bits and when I come across the long tedious nasty threads I am amazed at how petty people can be in cyberspace. I have heard from musician friends who have been members here how they stopped coming here because of the sh*te that is posted. Keep it relevant to the mission of the website!
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Now there is being bored, and being boring. Posting sensible down to earth things could in reality mean that you are trying to foist your ideas onto everyone else, being a smart arse, the very thing Greenwiggle accuses the less reverent posters of being.
Posting and talking rubbish, and arguing all the time, that's what discussion sites are for, to relieve boredom.
And you can be sensible now and again and offer advice.
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Well said Greenwiggle, and if I've been guilty my apologies. But you have to admit, sometimes the smartarsed remarks can be funny....no? Well, think about the initial request: you should have included: "lighten up"
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
I want to be a sober and sensible fellow if I can and can see the merits of living in a world that is all sweetness and light. But I really hate to say this. I agree completely with Mr Bliss, and not just because he is a fellow aficionado of Bach and late Beethoven. I like my world to have all its warts attached, thank you very much.
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Oh, I wouldn't say I'm going to be a good little boy, but I don't want to be associated with stoopid and endless petty bickereing. That's just utterly w ankerish.
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Still, some folk manage to be as w ankerish with one or two comments as others do participating in stoopid and endless petty bickering. It's as much about quantity as it is about quality.
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Hahaha!
Every time I see a bloody doctor he wants to do a blood test which means I don't drink for two weeks before the blood test to try to get my liver enzymes down but it doesn't work and my enzymes are always up and he tells me to stop drinking so I don't like to go to see doctors unless I suspect I've got curable terminality. I think that's a healthy attitude.
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Yes, Key -- 'twasn't an attack. Just disagreeing slightly with you and some of the people joking around here about not wanting it all to turn to sweetness and light here. I think the long, back-and-forth bickers are maybe the worst, but some of brief jabs sometimes aren't right either....though, I suppose, sometimes they are!
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
'Twas I who railed (in a minor way) against a world all sweetness and light. No jab intended. I really do try to post light-heartedly at times, though a forum that was just that wouldn't really survive, would it?
Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
'shaughneen' = 'little Johnny'. The 'Culchie's' name for Dubliners. Accusing the Dubs of sucking up to 'John Bull' ; thus anyone with a syncophantic nature. . . now - what's a Culchie?

Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
Spot on, Greenwiggle.
Just one question - wot's 'shaughneen' mean?
Eno
P.S. Love the quote "Don't start a tune you can't finish". I'll have to remember that one...

The Roaring Barmaid's a great tune. I've been having a bash at the Collier's reel - love Paddy Keenan's version.

Sad to see KML going over to the "conformists", even if somewhat reluctantly.
Don't know if I like steve's summation or not:-}

Sorry, Mr Bliss. I got you mixed up with Michael there. I'm doing this more and more lately but I refuse to see a doctor about it.

Re: Flowers and Brickbats for the recent threads of discontent
"W ankerish?"
Reminds me of an ancient joke. You really do have to be quite old...
Little boy talking to his mate says, "That bloke who does the football on the telly must have spent a lot of time on ships."
Friend asks, "Which bloke?"
"Jimmy Hill," says first boy.
"Why do you think he's spent a lot of time on ships?"
"Cos every time he comes on telly my dad shouts, "Jimmy Hill, you anchor!!"
