I kneed some sugjections on songs to play for a bunch of 8th graders. A friend of mine and I were asked to play some music during a confirmation retreat. But, we only know drinikng songs and a very few instumental peices(like Over the Waterfall).
So, any sugjected songs/tunes would be apreciated. They dont have to be religious, as long as they are not bawdy. ;)
Thanks! I'll Tell Me Ma and Wild Mountain Thyme are already in our repituar. So, it will cheak those out with the lady in charge! (always open for mote sugjestions though! ) The Mingualay Boat Song looks interesting, is that sort of like Luky's Boat?
An eight grader in a child who in the eighth grade in school, Nicholas. It's prabably just an American thing.
Och weel mon, if yer gonna be up fur a wee Scottish song, then hoo aboot this yun, Eleiel. It's no exactly bawdy but am sure yer 8th graders wid ha'e some fun singing along tae this yin:
THE BEE FROM THE OLD TOWN OF EFFEN
(Matt McGinn)
He kept bees in the old town of Effen
An Effen beekeeper was he
And one day this Effen beekeeper
Was stung by a big Effen bee
Now this big Effen beekeeper's wee Effen wife
For the big Effen polis she ran
For there's nobody can sort out a big Effen bee
Like a big Effen polisman can
The big Effen polisman he did his nut
And he ran down the manin Effen street
In his hand was a big Effen baton
He had big Effen boots on his feet
The polis got hold of this big Effen bee
And he twisted the Effen bee's wings
But thes big Effen bee got his own back
For this big Effen bee had two stings
Now they're both in the Effen museum
Where the Effen folk often come see
The remains of the big Effen polis
Stung to death by the big Effen bee
That's the end of that wee Effen story
'Tis an innocent wee Effen tale
But if you ever tell it in Effen
You'll end up in the old Effen jail
Your use of the equal sign is incorrect. I suggest the format I've adopted here, or you could use "'Ooops' should read 'oops'."
I hate to be pedantic but I took my cue from you. *Sigh.* A post like your second one would have got you booted off the harmonica forum. We're here because of our common love of ITM, not because we all wanted to join a band of walking dictionaries
Naturally, I had to make an exception for the miniscule error made by Michael...
The Mingualay Boat Song can be found on the Mudcat Cafe website (where it's spelt "Mingulay"). The original words were written by the Scottish conductor Sir Hugh Roberton in 1938, and one thread at least links to these; the tune is an older Gaelic one The first verse of the song is its chorus, between verses.
There's a (slightly fussy) midi clip of the tune on Mudcat, and I gather the tune was originally meant to be played / sung in F. It is not at present in the "Tunes" section here.
"Eight grade = 13-14 years old, unless the student was held back."
I see. So that'll be what we used to call 3rd year and now have to call Year 9 or Key Stage 3. Simple really.
I lost track when they replaced our system of three terms plus half-term holidays (that's six half-terms) by six whole terms at exactly the same dates as the six half terms at a cost of £45 billion or thereabouts.
Sorry if I was being an a**hole, Eleiel. I was just temporarily stunned by the sudden unexpected showcase of exotic spellings, and reacted by being unappreciative and defensive. But I've calmed down now, and have a more open mind than before.
Freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of spelling.
Liberté, fraternité, egalité!
Depending on the school, rural or inner city his Eleiel might need to really work up dynamic arrangements. 8th grade in the U.S. is the dreaded middle school or junior high depending on your location. At this age they're pretty cynical just trying to be cool. Fact is that the only music they're into is rap or some form of punk. I'm talking about the majority here, there are a small number of students who take private lessons who are very broad in musical experience but they wouldn't tell their peers on a bet, a sure way of getting labeled a geek. Let's say that everybody wants to be young again, just nobody wants to be young enough to return to junior high. The other side of the equation is that if well done Eleiel may get the same amount of energy and enthusiasm reserved for rock stars. One other advantage is that with their limited knowledge no 8th grader will gig you for not playing strictly ITM. "Mister, that bowing wasn't strictly proper Irish technique."
Yeah I know what you mean Jrathbun. I don't think these kids will be too particualar. It is a very small Catholic school, there will only be 24 or so 8th graders. We are playing sort of back ground things. Maybe he is a one drinking song for fun!
Actualy my main concern is trying to get my friend to play diferent type of tune; instead of real songs, like Green Feilds of France, somethng more like the Tzar of Munster. He never learns a tune unless he really REALLY likes it. He plays really well, it just is a bit frustrating that he can be so pickey.

My spelling is bad. I am sorry; I meant "repertoire" not "repituar".
Any way, is the Mingualay Boat Song in the tunes section?
# Posted on February 20th 2007 by Eleiel
Re: I kneed some sugjections!
kneed = need
sugjections = suggestions
drinikng = drinking
peices = pieces
apreciated = appreciated
cheak = check
mote = more
prabably = probably
Also:
it = I
any way = anyway
Your spelling, typing and grammar is not bad, it's terrible.

Re: I kneed some sugjections!
Ooops, missed one:
in = is
Also:
a child who in the eighth grade = a child who IS in the eighth grade
