Re: My first exposure to Last Nights Fun, UK band that rocks
Strange - the reviews appear to be glowing, but the three tracks don't exactly inspire. The first two are take offs of previous recordings, which makes them sound a bit like a covers band. I presume they're more than that given the number of gigs listed. And I notice that Kate Rusby & John McCusker feature on their first ever album, so perhaps it's that the Rusby version of The Roseville Fair sounds like Last Night's Fun's original, not the other way round...certainly the mp3s on their website are a lot more interesting than the ones on MySpace.
It is a bit worrying that they don't credit the songs - the second track is a Cyril Tawney composition. Perhaps the MySpace site is 'still under construction'.

there's more to them than the music - they're good craic as well. i believe the bodhran player is a recent addition, and i'm looking forward to seeing them in whitby. is anyone else going?
Re: My first exposure to Last Nights Fun, UK band that rocks
Sorry about 'glowing', couldn't help that.
Tunes, I meant those that you didn't know, or had you never heard the Cliffs Of Mohair ( inside joke for us Oirish old farts ).
Besides their very creative tunes, what is most remarkable about them is being an international Irtrad band. The concertina player I believe used be an English Folk Concertinist, the singer is Irish. The Piper I don't know much about.
Well I certainly enjoy their performances and I bet we will hear lots more about them over the next couple of years.
Re: My first exposure to Last Nights Fun, UK band that rocks
there are two or three youtube clips of them also....i lke the playing of their concertina man very much.....not quite what i'd call "irish," but great in its own right.....a very individual trad-inspired style......the youtube clips are really neat.....
Re: My first exposure to Last Nights Fun, UK band that rocks
I saw this band a couple of years ago and made these comments elsewhere.
"This was a perfect example of a "curate's egg".
Without doubt, this band is comprised of excellent musicians, especially Chris Sherburn on concertina. Nick Scott is also a fine piper and Denny is no slouch on guitar. So, the instrumental sets were great even if the arrangements suggested that they had just been transferred from "the session" to a concert platform.
However, the failings in the performance were the songs and long "drawling" introductions along with a generally poor stage presentation. Denny actually has quite a strong and not unpleasant voice but his style of singing (almost monotone)was completely unsuited to the choice of songs. The low point of the night was the rendition of Micky McConnell's "Tinkerman's daughter" which is usually one of my favourite songs.
Chris Sherburn's "drawling" Yorkshire humour which might have been funny as a "fill in" if, for instance, the guitarist had broken a string or something became extremely wearing after a while.
All in all, a not unenjoyable performance but disappointing especially after all the good reports I've heard about this band."

Found these guys on MySpace, wasn't looking for anything in particular.
I really like the originality of their tunes and the absolutely amazing voice of the singer Denny!

When I saw them at Broadstairs last year I was quite impressed but enjoyed the patter more than the tunes.

Wow, does anyone remember the original Last Nights Fun band? It was in the early 80's, Tommy Peoples, Paddy Keenan and Johnny Moynihan.
Now, THAT was powerful!
