Old Man Dillon, recording list

Old Man Dillon, recording list

Hello, everyone:
I believe that there has been an error in the list of recordings of the tune "Old Man Dillon". It listed the album "Martin Hayes"(1993) by Martin Hayes. But this 1993 album doesn't have it. I think Martin played it in the jig set, "The Cat in the Corner / John Naughton's", the 5th track of his 1997 album "Lonesome Touch". I am not sure whether John Naughton ever composed this tune or Martin just meant that he learned it by listening to John Naughton's playing.

best,
Hae-Young

Re: Old Man Dillon, recording list

Hi, Hae-Young. This is John, Peter D.'s friend in San Diego. I hope you got the info I sent to you about Maid in the Meadow.

I don't have the 1993 album. But you're right that Track 5 of Lonesome Touch has John Naughton's Jig, which is a G Dorian setting of Old Man Dillon (usually A Dorian). Naughton was a concertina player from Co. Clare known for his distinctive settings, to which his name was attached. So that is probably the case here. Maybe one of the Clare experts around here can explain more.

There is a short bio of the man here:

And more info about the tune here:

Cheers!

Indeed, one and the same. A great friend and music mate of mine from way back.

I believe Hae-Young is in Seoul. She used to live in New York, and studied with Patrick Ourceau.

Just thinking I should apologize in advance to Hae-Young if I've posted too much information about her. It's not my prerogative. But I'm just impressed by her CV. :-)

Re: Old Man Dillon, recording list

The East Clare version of the tune also appears on Mary MacNamara's first recording as John Naughton's. Her version is probably the same as the one Martin Hayes recorded since they used to be musical partners.

Re: Old Man Dillon, recording list

Used be a simple 2 part tune, O Niell lists it as a 3 part tune.

I first came across it in the 1950s in the middle of Ireland as a colloquial tune, ie lilt or carant.

Re: Old Man Dillon, recording list

It is just a matter of the database matching the title automatically. The link is established if the title is the same, or if the tune name is in the "Also known as" list.

If you look in the "Also known as" list in Old Man Dillon, you will find John Naughton's. And then if you look on the Hayes recording, you will find John Naughton's. In this case, the only coincidence is the name, not the tune.

This is both a strength and weakness of the database. It makes it easier and harder to find tunes.
