How many old musicians are here?

How many old musicians are here?

Just wondering how many people of advanced years there are here. I'm only 27 years away from receiving my free bus pass (a singularly useless thing to own in Mid-Wales). I'm not very wise, but I'm balding and greying, and my joints creak a bit sometimes.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I'm turning 51 this year and just started fiddling 3 years ago. Some days I feel old, and some days I don't.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Older than the people in the other thread, and generally younger than the people in this thread...

Re: How many old musicians are here?

At 50 I'm a lot younger than a lot of the tunes I try to play! <g>

Re: How many old musicians are here?

51. But inside I feel like 18. It was kinda spooky seeing the 5 and the 1 in close proximity to each other and to me.

Been playing whistle about 4 years, guitar for near 10 times that.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

53 and I've been playing long enough that I really should be a lot better at it than I am.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I'm 69, been playing fiddle a little more than four years. It's still a bit of a struggle but I love it. Just need another 20 years to get good at it.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Mid 50s - playing since 5 - IMT from mid-teens.
I have put more tunes to the back of my mind than I currently play, but a reminder can bring a tune flooding back after 30 years.
As any busker will tell you - you measure tunes by the hour (without repeats) not by how many you know.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I'm only nineteen, though I've done that three times so far.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Who you calling old ?
Oh, yeah, that's a free bus pass in my pocket, so what ? I've worked hard for that - I survived.
As I always say, I am so old I saw the Beatles play live 1963, first national tour, I was a teenager.
I have instruments 2 to 3 times older than me, no-one looks down on them !

Re: How many old musicians are here?

55 going on 39. Old is a mind set.

PA for too many years. Button Box for just over a year. At 7 years to learn, 7 years to practice, and 7 years to play, that takes me through 76.

The I have threatened Herself that I would take up the pipes. So at 7 years to learn, 7 years to practice, and 7 years to play, that takes me through 97.

Then I told Herself, I would teach her to golf.

42 is that old or young?

Re: How many old musicians are here?

What's age? Everyone, no matter how old they really are, feels 25 inside.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I'll be 55 in May. Anyone other than me object to the term "older" when "old" is what is meant? As in "There's this older guy who plays really lousy flute, but he thinks he's cool."

# Posted on February 13th 2007 by Ailin

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Actually I still feel 17 inside. But bits of me keep telling me that's a lie.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

"42 is that old or young?"

The meaning of life begins at 42.

At 33, do I qualify as a long player? (or do I have to wait another 1/3 of a year?)

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Jayz ye are only teenie boppers! I can give away a decade but I am still picking up new instruments.

Fiddled for 30 years or more and quit TG,

Played TW since I was old enogh to chew out the wood block from the Clark - put it this way, I remember Irish Thatched Cottages, sidecars, old IRA men roaring at me and 2 shilling harmonicas bought for the Wrenday.

# Posted on February 14th 2007 by Schlongbow

54 playing fiddle since I was 38. Mostly Old TIme, some Irish.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I used to add letters to 29 (29a, 29b, etc.) until my brother kindly reminded me that I had run out of letters. So now I'm 39s. Only feel old when the only names you recognize at the Grammies are the ones getting Lifetime Achievement Awards!

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I took up the fiddle when I turned 60 and been playing now for 2 1/2 years.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I took up the recorder, harmonica, pennywhistle and bodhran at about 58 yrs. and returned to saxophone (after 39 years) soon after. I'm now active playing Scots, Irish, English, Old Timey, "big band" and concert band music at 75 years.. .. and loving every minute of it! What (when) is old?

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Another old one here! 63, playing fiddle from 54, so that's 9 years of struggle, practice practice practice and stretch stretch stretch but being able to join great sessions nowadays. Going to Canberra in april, anyone out there going too?

Re: How many old musicians are here?

I'm 68 started trying to play tenor banjo at 50. One day I'll get it right.

Re: How many old musicians are here?

Oh, what I'd give for the stamina to be fit for a 29 year old Celtic! Yes, I'd love to feel a 29 year old again .................... sadly I've lost her phone number! ;-)

But enough of this, yes I'm 55 & proud to have made it this far! It's been a b£oody long walk!
This means I've been scratching away at a Fiddle longer than most folks here have actually been alive!!!!! ....... & you certainly wouldn't think it to hear me, but enough of my usual modesty - anymore of that & I'll start to sound like Bliss, milking for appreciation!
Sheeesh ... you know he even threatened to retire, next door! I reckon he only did that to see how many folks would come on here & plead with him to stay.
But you've got to ask yourself, how many World class Bodhran players can this forum really handle at any one time!

Anyway, the only shame is - I was born the same year as Comhaltas! :-( Who, I hear you ask .......
