Reminds me a lot of the Morning Star, and there is apparently a hornpipe derivative of that tune (http://thesession.org/tunes/display/5017). Although the youtube version is even closer to the actual reel than this HP version.
I don't think it's either. Don't recognise the tune so can't help you, but I'd guess it's probably a modern composition by someone who has heard the Morning Star before. Could be wrong tho' - could be trad.
Anyway, whatever it is, it sounds like a reel to me, not a hornpipe..
Don't even get me started >: - (
I would complain if I were one of the dancers. I'm glad I'm not one of the dancers, incidentally.
Och, it's definitely a Reel, but I still say it's the Morning Star - remember, it is being played by a Guitar player who is clearly & quite simply putting his own slant on the whole thing, especially the first part.
After all, why play the real tune, especially all those tricky bits, when a simplified pastiche of same will do the job, just as well?
It's actually quite an interesting version of the tune with a more minor feel to it than the standard setting. Maybe it's in one of the O'Neill's books or something.
Yup could be the morning star, i actually thought it was Arty McGlyn playing for a minute. I do not aprove of the comment about the Hitler goose stepping comment-in fact its out of order and insulting ihave words with this guy

Ahhhhhhh! Morning Star is it. Listened to that clip in the wee hours this morn and I couldn't get the name but I knew the tune ! Near drove me mad trying to get to sleep. Took two cups of cocoa to knock me out . It's suspended from my repertoire for now.
Very cool! Thanks a bunch to all and double thanks to Dow for posting the Emin version!!

BTW, my handle is pronounced "gwa" and is actually the phonetic representation of one of the first sounds uttered by newborns of Icelandic/Irish decent.
OK... now that we have that sorted out... that was one of the most bizarre things I've watched in a long time. Does anyone but me think the dance performance and the music were in separate galaxies? What a weird juxtaposition! Wouldn't an actual hornpipe have been better suited?
Can anyone identify this tune
Can anyone identify this tune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uazcKOtquIk
It's obviously not "Sailor's Hornpipe." Nor is it the "Drunken Sailor's (hornpipe)." Nor is it "Galway Bay"...
Thanks.

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
I do believe that to be Cooley's Reel, but I could be wrong.

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
I think it's a strange version of Cooley's too.

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
I'd vote for 'definitely not Cooley's' - 'cos doesn't change to D where you'd expect, and the shape's all wrong.
Second section just *is* Morning Star, isn't it?
Can't believe I allowed myself to listen to the awful racket, though. And what's with the 'Hitler youth' goose-stepping?

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
Yes, I reckon it's the Morning Star alright:

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
On 2nd listening I'd say you're right, Ptarmy. I was thrown by the fact that the recording starts at bar 3 of the tune.
X: 1
T: Morning Star, The
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Emin

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
Nice work Dow. Makes me wonder what Arty McGlynn would do with this tune on his 'lectric geetar'!

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
It'd make a good flute setting.

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
.. & also a fine Banjo setting!

Re: Can anyone identify this tune
Sorry for the offence - I just thought the step looked out of place the way it was being done. Could have chosen less extreme language, though.
