CO1U microphone warning

CO1U microphone warning

Just a quick warning to anyone who buys a Samson CO1U USB microphone.
Mine arrived today and worked ok until I foolishly downloaded and installed Samson's SoftPre software.

Now it doesn't work at all. Anyone else had this experience?

Sadly, uninstalling SoftPre doesn't get it working again. :-(

Re: CO1U microphone warning

Thanks for the link, Jerry. Made interesting reading after today's fiasco trying to get this wretched mic working.
Tried his suggestions for reinstalling as a standard USB device, still doesn't work though.
I'll see what tech support come up with.

Re: CO1U microphone warning

If I were you, I wouldn't be passing judgment on a device you've barely used and haven't troubleshooted on a public message board. For all you know, it might a problem specific to your system, not with the quality of any software or hardware you might have purchased.

Re: CO1U microphone warning

Tigermoth.... are you on Windows XP perchance? They have something called System Restore. You open the program list, go to accessories, then pick system tools, and from there, System Restore. A calendar comes up, and the dates in bold are the ones you can pick to restore to. Pick the date right before you installed the program.

It will take a few minutes, and is reversible if you don't like it, likely you won't see any difference except those program settings will be gone. It will bring you back in time. It has saved me from many problems.

If the mike works again, sans software, you will know the mike is OK, and the snafu is with the program. Maybe the mike shorted out though and is defective. Then you can likely get an exchange from the store.

Or.... download Audacity for free and see if the mike works with that after the faulty program is removed?

Re: CO1U microphone warning

Hi irisnevins, Never cared much for system restore, so always have it turned off. I use Acronis TI to take full images of my HDD for back-up. I usually only revert to an older image if things get really messed up, or I get totally defeated. Oh, and to save time will all that reformatting and activating XP malarkey.

I followed the instructions again on Jerry's post and also rolled me sleeves up and cleared out a load of stuff relating to SoftPre from the registry, and 'tada' it now works.

Been using Audacity for a fair while now, good isn't it.

Thanks for trying.

Re: CO1U microphone warning

Great!! Glad you worked it out. I use the CO1 regular condensers and find they are really great for the money. A sound person I know listened to our session recordings and said wow...those must be some expensive mikes you have.

I will have to look into Acronis. I use system restore now and then, it has been a lifesaver.

Yup...after Cubase, Cakewalk, Nuendo, I came back to Audacity. It does what I need it to do. I also, if needing more in the effects dept. have Diamond Cut. Not a free download however. I usually don't use it, except for where something needs complete salvaging, like some stuff off mini-disc that has potential for being a nice recording to listen to while driving. Diamond Cut was originally intended to salvage old recordings, 78's, 45's , cylinders etc. but is great for effects too.
