Can anyone help me? I'm really into English, Scotish and Irish music but I don't have a lot of knowledge of Welsh music. Does anyone know any really good artists that I could try to get me into it? Cheers
Besides the ones mentioned above, Crasdant is good; if you like vocal music, try Carreg Lafar, Fernhill, Ffynnon, Rag Foundation, and (the alas late) Siwsann George; and if you incline at all toward the unusual, try Aberjaber. You might see if you can find some compilation albums to give you a cross-section of groups and styles, too. I'd recommend the "Rough Guide to the Music of Wales", the stupidly-named but nonetheless good "Celtic Wales", and "Gorau Gwerin".
-saw them a few years ago - two great fiddlers (Cass Meurig was one) and some outstanding singing - don't know if the band is still together - the web site is gone - but there are sound clips from their CD "Perllan" around.
Here's a link from "The Late Session" Nov.27th 2005 featuring a couple of Welsh musicians in concert with Irish musicians Josephine Marsh and Declan Corey.
"Gorau Gwerin: The Best Of Welsh Folk Music"
Sain SCD 2006 ~ 1992
This is alright as a fun introduction, featuring that famous group of groups "Various Artists". I'd go with this one before the Rough Guide CD...
I love Ar Log - they inspired me to start playing the harp. They did some great arrangements. I think "Ar Log" is Welsh for "For hire" but I might be wrong. Anyway, thanks for reviving some memories!
Pigyn Clust are recording a new CD in the next couple of weeks.
The fflach CD "Ffidil" has got a good selection of tunes, many played in Welsh sessions.
Cass Meurig has authored/edited a substantial 18th century welsh fiddlers tune book, called "Alawon John Thomas" and published (I think) by the National Library of Wales.
I saw Crasdant recently, led by Robin Huw Bowen, and was moved to buy the latest CD "DWNDWR" which comes with a DVD. Worth getting just to hear a pibgorn played.
Ceri Rhys Matthews has a new solo pibgorn cd recently released. Also plays great welsh trad flute. Listen to Fernhill (Julie Murphy wonderful voice) and Ffynnon (Lynne Denman wonderful voice) Ffynnon new cd is called Adar Gwylltion. Frank Hennessy has put together two Celtic Heartbeat programmes (BBC Radio Wales) based on his visit to Celtic Connections this January. Part One will be broadcast Saturday, 10 February at 7.30, and Part Two the following week. The programmes will include interviews with various members of the Welsh Contingent and promoters from Europe and North America. Are Ar Log still about ? my knowledge of them is rather historical. Like, the '70's.

I have some old Thistle and Shamrock tapes with some of their stuff. Very nice! I've *got* to get around to CD-izing those tapes.
Some of the later "Ar Log" recordings are good, too.
