Help identifying tunes?

Help identifying tunes?

Hey! I saw this great set by De Dannan on youtube, and I'd love to know what these tunes are! I am pretty new to ITM and can't recognise them off the top of my head as most of you can, I'm sure! Here's the link, thanks for your help!

Re: Help identifying tunes?

The first is either Langstroem's Pony or I for get the name of the other. Second is one of Sean Ryan's, I think. I switched off after that, a bad link/connection, kept stuttering.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Hey Strathfoyle, phew! I thought I was the only one who experienced that. The last few times I've visited YouTube I've given up in complete despair because each video clip I tried would only run for a few seconds & then stop, start & stop, & start & stop - INFURIATING!

Re: Help identifying tunes?

If you just wait for a couple of minutes until the movie is fully loaded it will run more or less without any stuttering.

Thanks for the tips.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

I got the stuttering too with this one - worse than ever.

But the first tune is Tom Billy's (jig, rather than reel), sometime played more like a slide than a jig.

Couldn't get any further - bloody YouTube ...

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Second one is the one usually referred to just as 'Sean Ryan's'

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Maybe YouTube is just too large now. Perhaps it's time to divide it up into musical genres - a Trad YouTube site .............. Mmmmmmm

Re: Help identifying tunes?

The reel is one I've played for years and years - probably at least 30. But can I remember the name? No ... Can't be bothered to search for it here, but it's bound to be here ... used to be a common enough tune ...

# Posted on February 4th 2007 by benhall.1

Re: Help identifying tunes?

... should have said BOTH reels ... both of them were common enough ...

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Ben, I knew it was langstroem's pony or Tom Billy's :-) something about those A tunes....I always confuse the names. I should have known better with DeDannan of thirty years ago. One of my favourite bands.

Btw, was that Johnny Moynihan on bouzouki ?

Re: Help identifying tunes?

According to the YouTube blurb it is indeed Johnny Moynihan - hard to tell through the hair!

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Ah yes indeed - & I thanks me lucky stars (yuck yuck yuck) that I was able to see these guys perform live, a few times - my all time favourite ITM band.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

benhall I've never heard Tom Billy's played as a slide. Prolly because it's not a slide and never will be - it's a jig. Also the Sean Ryan tune has a proper title - it's called The Castle. The Sandmount is a brilliant tune - one of my faves. Other names for the the 4th tune of the set (Clogher Reel) are the Hills of Clogher (as it appears in Mally's tunebook) and The Flowers Of Red Hill, which is the title I've known it by.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Sorry Dow - Tom Billy's was taught to me by Bobby Casey a long time ago as a slide. Perhaps it never will be a slide again ... but hey, I expect you know best.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

CLANG!!!!

How's yer head, Dow, after getting THAT name dropped right on top of it?

:-)

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Er, no, Bobby Casey taught you a slide version of the jig called Tom Billy's. There's a difference. Like, someone famous could teach you a jig version of the Maid Behind The Bar, but you couldn't then say "the Maid Behind The Bar is a jig". You might have a jig version, but for everyone else but you and your famous person, it's a reel.

LOL @ KML - yes he's even worse than you with his name-dropping and that's saying a lot.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Sorry Ben I just reread your posts and you didn't actually ever say "it's a slide". I thought you did, but you didn't. In fact you said it's a jig that is sometimes played as a slide. I've totally misread what you've said. Sorry!

Re: Help identifying tunes?

On the subject of De Dannan, which seems to be the spelling on their albums, a search of this site will produce nothing until you type "De Danann".

# Posted on February 5th 2007 by oldstrings

Re: Help identifying tunes?

They used "De Danann" on at least one early album. Or was it the other way around? Anyway, they've used both spellings.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Thanks Dow.

Yes, what I wrote was, in fact, what I meant. Good to have it acknowledged.

The name-dropping was naughty, I know. Born out of frustration, but no excuse.

Sorry.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Interesting article in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Dannan

It seems they did originally call themselves De Danann, which is what I always expected it to be, after the tribe 'n' all. Never could understand why it was some other spelling than that. Now I know: it's "For reasons that have never been made clear".

That explains it then.

Re: Help identifying tunes?

Thanks so much for all your all your help! That's got it figured out I think. Thanks for the specifics, Dow.
