The note A is an important note needed in all the poplular scales used in TM. If you tune the A string to B then the this particular A note would be found only on the 7th fret of the D string (or the 14th fret of the G string). If you have long fingers you may not find this as a problem
If you really want to do this, then I think it could be better to use the tuning of all of the four high strings (DGBE) of the guitar. I can't see why it wouldn't work except that you are missing a buch of low notes.
Trouble is, with that tuning DGBE, a lot of tunes become harder to play, as you end up crossing 3 strings instead of two. Standard GDAE is better for most trad tunes, and DGBE is good for chords. Just my opinion.

Guys and fellow banjo-spankers:
What are your thoughts on the +s or detriments of having the A string tuned to B, aside from the cross picking of the b/c/d triplet?
i.e. if the top 2 strings were tuned like a guitar would you really be giving up that much aside from the open A for doublestops and pedals?
