I've a couple of Paolo piano accordions, one of which I'm particularly fond of and would like to have new reeds fitted and a general refurb. Has anybody come across a real specialist? Cost less important than quality.
Re: New reeds to old Paolo piano boxes..who?..where?
the guy who done my paolo soprani piano box originally was john brosnan from co kerry. i'm sure others are just as good but i found him flawless (always a good sign) and very professional. will cost ya though....
Re: New reeds to old Paolo piano boxes..who?..where?
I'd just add that you are unlikely to need new reeds, unless the box has been so badly treated that they are severly rusted, in which cas the rest of the instrument is probably shot too. Reeds are really pretty durable, unlike the wax that holds the reedplates in place, and the valves that control the low of air through the reeds. Both wax and valves deteriorate, the usual signs being a variety of unpleaseany buzzing wheezing and clicking noises.
Replacing reeds is also likely to cahnge the character of your box so you might loose the sound that you like.
I suggest that you need a reed overhaul, rather than new reeds.
Re: New reeds to old Paolo piano boxes..who?..where?
Many thanks lads (all lads?) for the "sound" advice. The box though old is very solid and I think would be worth the trouble. The present sound is typically Paolo and tuned quite "wet". I would be happier with a tighter reed pairing even if a bit "cooler". I'll try John Brosnan in Kerry (as I'm in Dublin" I wonder if he has a website? I might also try Allodi in lewisham. A weekend in U.K. might be nice at this time of year. Will post my success or lack of in time.

I very much second Conan's recommendation, but you need to put something in your bio, so's we have an idea where you are.
