I have recently won a Yamaha SV200 electric violin. Whilst an electric will never sound as good as my normal fiddle, the Yamaha is extremely dissapointing, being harsh, and unmusical to my ears and far worse sounding than a Yamaha 120 I already have; incidently this recent 120 is itself much worse than an older 100 model I have heard. So much for progress!. Has anyone else got any ideas how to improve the sound before it is consigned to the back of a cupboard. I have already tried a better bridge and Dominant Strings.
There's nothing wrong with needing more.......( insert name of chosen instrument here ) though it can lead to Obsessive Instrument Acquisition Syndrome. Even if it drives one's better half wild.
I have a 120 and love it. It doesn't sound so great without EQ, but through my amp it is very impressive. In my mind anyway, it sounds (post-EQ, that is) like a really nice instrument. The G string may not have quite the "grittiness" (I don't know what to call it, you probably know what I'm talking about) that most acoustics do, but I actually like the slightly muffled sound having the bass all the way up makes. It also sounds pretty good through an effects module (awful with this king of music, though...).
If you're just going to throw it in the back of cupboard, I'll take it
Change the strings - my Yamaha sounded dreadful until I took off their strings and put some decent ones on. I still prefer my other fiddles but the Yamaha allows me to practise
Sorry - computer sent without me doing anything - weird!!
It allows me to practise silently and is also useful in the band with a full drum kit to get over!!
Get an EQ pedal! I had a strauss electric violin, and it sounded much better through the pedal. (I used a danelectro fish & chips). I now have a bridge aquila electric violin which I plug straight into the P.A and it sounds great. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Re: Yamaha SV200 Electric Violin
Flog it on ebay and get yourself a Swordfish.
You might want to change that first phrase of your second sentence afterwards.

Re: Yamaha SV200 Electric Violin
"Won"? What the hell does that mean.
And why do you need so many fiddles anyway?
(And you have to admit that that's a good use of starting a sentence with and. And ending one.)

Re: Yamaha SV200 Electric Violin
I would be interested in buying. I have a nice acoustic fiddle but dont want to take it with me while traveling. Are you interested in selling?
