Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

Thinking about taking this degree in September but have only read what the university has to say about it, so does anyone know ANYTHING about it? Thanks in advance.

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

Don't know about that degree course, but I went to Sheffield Uni, but that was over 2 decades ago.
Firstly Sheffield is a great place to be a student. (Then again maybe anywhere is great when you're a student.) Accomodation and other living expenses (including beer - v.imp. as a student) are, or were, cheap, and there are lots of good studenty nightlife spots. Also the session scene was very lively then and by accounts read here, remains so. As the Uni is to the west of the city centre and it is a medium-sized city, near enough everything is within walking distance. Although I did a science degree, even I was aware that Sheff Uni boasts a thriving Arts faculty, presumably which is where that degree course is run. So endless varieties of weird freaky arts-type students roam around campus.
Maybe some other members here can update you but I found Sheff a city of friendly faces, even though Yorkshire people wield a hard sarcastic wit, which even for a Glasgow lad, took a bit of getting used to. The city itself is quite pretty as cities go with plenty of parks and open spaces, and it is built, allegedly on 7 hills. It is also on the very edge of the Peak District National Park, and you can get buses straight out to lovely Derbyshire villages. The Peak District is also accessible by pushbike, and if really energetic can be accessed on foot. Also superb for rock-climbing if that's what you're into.
That'll do for now.

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

Lots of music in the city and university celi soc very strong and lots of students then stay in Sheffield. Can't help with any details of the course but if you are coming for a look - pm me and I can show you a few sessions or give you a couch to sleep on. I might even have moved further into the centre of Sheffield by then

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

wow cheers for the responses. think I am going for an open day in March so might no a bit better then. Just wanted to know what was the standard of the students taking that course because I must be relatively sh*t, having only begun playing folk music less than a year ago! I'm from yorkshire so the hard sarcastic wit shouldn't affect me too much either lol.

There are more sessions in South Yorkshire than you can shake a rain-stick at.

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

Not to introduce a note of discord, but what can you do with that particular degree when you've got it ? ( I'm just jealous, there's a frightening number of highly talented young musicians coming out of the Newcastle and Glasgow courses already, saw one band at Towersey last year, all amazing young musicians, never had that chance myself, etc., etc., breaks down and sobs into beer........)

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

But really, what do you do with any degree (except maybe the very vocational ones like medicine dentistry law & engineering)? It's only a way of showing that you can run round the treadmill. At least if you do something that would hold your interest, like the one above, you might actually enjoy the coursework. So that in itself would be worthwhile.

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

The student grafitti on toilet walls is amusing though. One, well two actually, I remember:

Someone had written:

MY MOTHER MADE ME A HOMOSEXUAL.

Below which someone else wrote:

IF I GAVE HER THE MATERIAL COULD SHE MAKE ME ONE AS WELL?

Re: Trad Music and Folklore at Sheff uni

I'm not really bothered with what i can do afterwards, just want to enjoy my time there. The thing is, I've got an unconditional offer for sheff but only on the back of my personal statement and my A levels (which didn't include music), and I don't really rate myself much as a musician, and especially not as a folk guitarist! I know about 10 tunes, so I'm a bit worried about being p*ssed all over by the 'fightening number of highly talented young musicians' if the shef course is owt like the Newcy and Glasgow one. But someitmes I just think feck it and go anyway, what do u think?
