Wow, I just downloaded The Morning Nightcap set from itunes...(Lunasa, ya'll!!! c'mon!!) and I swear it is giving me goosebumps it is that good. I go back and forth but I have to say, out of every fiddler I've ever heard, Sean Smyth's playing is the one I would like most to be able to emulate; even somewhat.
I think I'd like maybe, 60 percent Sean Smyth, 20 percent Eileen Ivers, 10 percent Natalie McMaster, 10 percent Oisin McDiarmada in my playing! but there's also a lot of other musicians I'd like to add as well....
Alister Fraiser, Kevin Crawford, Liz Carol, and Andy McGann to name a few...hard to decide!!! ah well, I'll survive somehow...

For Guitar - John Doyle, Ross Martin, Dick Gaughan, Richard Thompson, Martin Simpson, Kris Drever, Ian Carr, Anna Massie, Tim Edey, Innes Watson, Ali Hutton, Sean O'Donnell, That Guy from YouTube that is really good - the list could probably go on for ever - there are so many styles I want to play them all (I'm greedy and unrealistic - there we go)
For Whistle - Marc Duff, Brian Finnigan, Marc Duff, Ali Hutton/Ross Ainslie (really the same person!! ), Marc Duff, Hamish Napier, Marc Duff, Fraser Fifield, Marc Duff, Mary Bergin, Marc Duff, Iain MacDonald, Marc Duff - again there are so many great whistle players. I wonder who I think is the best?
Well if you want to know who I have a chance of emulating then the list would change to:
Guitar - Igor the one eyed, half-armed monkey
Whistle - some smelly bloke with long unwashed dreadlocks who lives in the wood to get in touch with nature and uses his whistle to call the spirits down to him.
What a strange handle, "this is me", for some one who would like them selves to be 100% 4 other people specifically, and if there is any room left, a whole host of others.
I spent a few years learning to emulate John Doyle. I started taking my own tack when he gave a workshop, blew my mind and showed me that there were a million other ways to play the instrument other than the slashing style that made him famous. Go figure.
For box, it would have to be John Williams. Those incredible right-hand chords...
There are so many great guitarists, but I seem to go back to Martin Simpson and Pierre Bensusan for ideas and inspiration. I lift stuff from other guys from time to time, but I get overstimulated and spin my wheels if I try to do it all.
No Cause- I heard that Igor the one-eyed, half-armed, guitar playing monkey is planning on entering the Fingerstyle Guitar Championships at Winfield this September (http://www.wvfest.com/) . I also heard he uses his tail to play barre chords. That'd be something to see.
I was having a similar conversation with another fiddle player the other day - what sound do you strive for when you play (I guess that's the same as emulate). I listen closely to Bobby Casey. I try to emulate that sound.
I cut my teeth listening to Bobby Casey recordings. Today, Cathal Hayden comes a close second. And I like Gerry O'Connor's fiddling for the same qualities.
I'm not really sure what my style is like. Actually check out www.youtube.com/fiddlinviolinin and someone tell me! I'd actually like to know. I'd like to think that I sound like Armand Aromin, but you never know.
