Has anybody been to the Edinburgh Ceilidh in past years?

Has anybody been to the Edinburgh Ceilidh in past years?

Has anybody here ever been to the Edinburgh Ceilidh in past years? I have to be in England first week of April, and was thinking of taking the train to Edinburgh for a day or two. Scotish, not Irish, I know, but I just wondered if anybody here had happen to visit this particular festival.

The festival being referred to is Ceilidh Culture:

Unfortunately the website isn't up to date, but keep watching it to see who'll be there this year. 24th March - 15th April in Edinburgh.

Re: Has anybody been to the Edinburgh Ceilidh in past years?

This event isn't quite a festival. Rather, it's the promotion of all the events and activities(quite a lot) which would be happening at this time of year, anyway, eg The Harp Festival, Folk club concerts, Queens Hall, TMSA, Youth Gaithering and much more. There are usually one or two special extra things organised by Ceilidh Culture too.

Most of these events have been held around Easter for several years and many are a "carry over" from the now defunct Edinburgh Folk Festival.

I'm not decrying the venture. It's a worthwhile project and a good idea to draw all the different strands together. Basically, it's for the benefit of tourists and visitors as most of the locals who are interested in traditional music are already aware of the different organisations.

My problem is that the event lacks a central focus(and festival atmosphere), although they did have a festival club last year at the weekends.

Anyway, don't be put off by my comments. Edinburgh is a lovely place to visit at this time of year. There *WILL* be plenty going on and a lot of the music may well be Irish too, if past years are anything to go by.
Also, there's lots of great pub sessions which should be even busier during the period.

nigeig and John J,

Thanks for the information -- I love Edinburgh, and so I think I will go there for a day or two and just see (and hear) what is up.

I think the updated Web site is suppose to posted in February.

As I say, it's all diferent organisations under one big umbrella

The Harp festival programme is already available, for instance

http://www.harpfestival.co.uk/concerts.htm

Also, a quick plug for The Edinburgh Folk club which I help to run

On 4th April, we have Gerry (Fiddle) and Donal Connor from Dundalk and the fantastic Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley from Orkney the following Wednesday(11th). See, not just Fousty old folk singers as discussed in the other thread. :-)
