Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

As we hibernate, exfoliate and verminate through the dank dark depths of gangrenous January, followed by the fear of frozen foreskins foretold before February, let us lighten the load by contemplating the architectural or natural delights to be viewed beyond the frosted windows of our nearby session pub.

I shall commence. What pleasurable vistas have we in South East London to delight our orbital apparatus beyond the hallowed casements of the snug at the Blythe Hill Tavern?

Hrrmmm... well, good question. With Catford on one side that's a 50% reduction in any possibilities. But! pray, Come West Along the Stanstead Road, dear sessioneers, just one mile, to the Horniman Museum, where we will delight in the musical instrument collection...and loadsa other stuff.
Due South a couple of miles we have the famous Crystal Palace Park where stood the Crystal Palace till it was burned to the ground in the 1930's, and where still stand the Victorian dinosaur replicas, anatomically incorrect, but still a sight to behold.
Greenwich Park is a mere 3 miles North, in the middle of which is the Observatory and the Meridian line.
And if you close your eyes going through Catford due East (not whilst driving) you will chance upon Eltham Palace, the former home of the Courtauld family, now open to the public.
And that is probably about it for our neck of the woods that is South East London.
I'm sure many of you session or live in the proximity of some spectacular haunts, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Canyon, Sydney Opera House, or Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.... c-beams ..glittering in the dark near Tanhauser Gate.... so delight us with your descriptions, if you will.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

The oldest courthouse in Ireland is outside the front door of the pub, and there is a complete Round Tower a few streets away, built before London was thought off.

Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, and Symphony Hall, home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (and considered one of the finest music halls in the world) are very close...

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Hmmm, let's see, I think you can see the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building as you walk out of O'Neill's on 3rd Ave., but I never paid attention because I was usually looking for a cab...and then if you go there by subway, you go through Grand Central Station, which is beautiful...

Then there's St. Andrew's on 44th St. right off of Times Square, which is the only reason I ever go into that neighborhood (WAY too many tourists)...

Not too many natural delights by the sessions in the Lower East Side. I think there was a tree outside one place I was at last night.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

One of the most beautiful and well known waterfronts in the world not ten minutes walk away from the Wednesday night session. The Liver Building might well be visible from the doorstep of the pub but as with you, kennedy that's not what I'm looking for when I leave the place. I attended a session in the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Langdale, Cumbria, last year. Not much can compere with walking back to the tent by moonlight after a few beers and some mighty tunes in this most amazing valley. This session is the first Wednesday of the month I think check out the pubs website to be sure.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Our session in Fremantle is about 5mins walk from the beach - Indian Ocean. The harbour here was built by an Irishman (C Y O'Connor) and next to it is the Fisherman's harbour from whence the America's Cup was staged in 1985/86. A far cry from the cold northern climes at present as we bask in the warmth of summer.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Durty's sessions in sydney is right next to the army barracks which was at the centre of a terrorist plot last year. May not be pretty but talk about dramatic!

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

A couple miles away from our session is Tipperary Hill, home to the only vertical stoplight in the USA (and maybe the world) with green on top.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Well, nothing in these parts of the woods really stand up as "landmarks" compared to the history that you find in the UK and Ireland (and New York and Boston, for that matter).

But we do play not too far from the newly completed Daniel Libeskind designed Denver Art Museum. And only a couple hours drive from some of the best skiing in the world (especially after the monster snow storms we've gotten in the last couple of weeks) ;-)

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

The north Cornwall coast is but a few minutes from The Tree Inn. I rest my case. The only time I ever went to Freo, in April 2005, it peed down all day and was 14°. About three days later, in Perth, it was 36°. You call that a climate?

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Well..........we have the famous Seattle Space Needle sitting just a few blocks away... constructed for the World's Fair of '62. Ride on up to the top for a view of one of the most beautiful bays you can imagine...nestled by the incredible Olympic Mountains. Walk over to the east end and check out the Cascade Mountains. Also visible are Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier. Make sure the clouds aren't around, however (and good luck there!)

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

lets see....5 minutes walk ....to the east is the waterfront with Te Papa the national museum, the globe theatre (made to vaguely resemble the globe), to the west there is the Opera house and the countries oldest university, and reputed to be one of the best music schools in the world. To the north there is parliament and alas no guy fawkes. To the south is the airport with the control tower nestled in amongst houses on the hillside, the zoo where the native birds emulate baboons terrifying the little old ladies as the territory changes. To the south west and north is the botanical gardens and green belt, over 200 hectares of gardens, forest and walkways nestled in the central city area.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Durham Castle and Cathedral dominate the nearby skyline, lit up at night in a tasteful orange-and-lemons effect; but you can't buy post-session pizzas or chicken wings there, so I hasten off in another direction.

One session pub was on the moors. The landscape was more changeable than it seemed. The grandstand view of Consett steel works disappeared after its sudden closure in 1980; while water action in the nearby moor-top reservoir exposed ancient logs / branches indicating there had once been a pine forest there.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

When I was into rock-climbing there used to be sessions at the New Years meet in the Clachaig Inn in Glencoe. Probably 20 years ago, so I don't know if they still occur. Can't do much better than that!
I also played in *a* Hotel in Langdale (also during the climbing days - The Early Years.) I can only assume it was the same one Flossie mentioned as I doubt if there are very many hotels there. And come to think of it another one somewhere in St. Govan's Head, Pembrokeshire. Many climbers seem to appreciate The Music - must be the outdoor rural feel to it or something. then again a lot of them liked heavy metal death wish music, appealing to some other portion of their psyche, I guess.

Reverend! You have the Rockies right on your doorstep. I'd call them a bit of a landmark :)

I'll be there next month skiing at Winter Park. Can't wait. :) :) :)

About a quarter mile away from the main session place in Baltimore is Fort McHenry. This is where Francis Scott Key penned the Star Spangled Banner, which is now better known as the US National Anthem.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square (where Nelson's Column is), Green Park, St James' Park, Whitehall, Downing Street, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Cathedral, the Thames, the Old Bailey, Museum of London, Royal Portrait Gallery, Fleet Street (traditional home of journalism, where Pepys and Dickens used to hang out in the Cheshire Cheese pub). All these are within 15 minutes walk, many a lot less, of where we play on a Sunday afternoon. Visitors to London might not be so tempted by our session now!

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Well, one bar is actually on what used to be called The Great North Road, the old roman road to York. On the other hand most of our local development is little over a hundred years old, but we have the celebrated Archer, standing on top of East Finchley station, firing his art deco arrows at central London. If you want to walk down the road to Muswell Hill you can hardly step a few feet without tripping over a luvvie, eg Maureen Lipman, to name a few, or you can gaze on the architectural splendours of Alexandra Palace. And up in Highgate we have a blue plaque on a house near the pub, stating that Charles Dickens once stayed there. Howsabout that, guys and gals ?

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Years ago I participated in either a Boxing Day or a New Year's Day session (I think it was B. Day) in a pub in the middle of no-where in Northumberland. The ritual was to get well primed in the pub and then swarm up the Wannies Rocks ( actually, The Great Wanny) to celebrate the piper Billy Pigg's tune "The Wild Hills Of Wannie", which is actually a slowed-down version of the Scottish jig "The Hows Of Glenorchie" but does make a very good air - and, furthermore, to do so by playing it and other tunes up on the top.
Cloud and soaking rain descended. I have a sketch of players huddled under umbrellas and playing concertinas or whatever under cagoules. I'd sooner get my dose of local atmosphere from an album in the warm.I don't know who else visits the Wannies Rocks - maybe there's the odd rock face for climbers.

Ours is here:

so famous York landmarks abound, notably York Minster (5-6 miles). Of course, there's another great session in town which is virtually in the shadow of the Minster and the City Walls:

Guersey Pete, I lived in Muswell Hill for three months in 1973. Are you sure they do not have a blue plaque on a door for me?

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Brunel's gorgeous suspension bridge across the Avon Gorge, Cabot Tower, Bristol Cathedral and the Council House, St Mary Redcliffe Church, and of course the hugely ginormous building site that used to be the Broadmead shopping centre.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Guernsey Pete, I was in London for a few days over Christmas, staying in Highgate. I saw that plaque you mentioned, in fact, on Christmas Day, we had a couple of pints in The Wrestlers. No sign of ITM but it was a lovely pub.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

KML how wrong you are there are two hotels, 'The Old DG' and 'The New DG' , and one pub with a bunkhouse 'The Sticklebarn' all within 15 minutes walk from the NT campsite in Langdale. But The ODG is the only one I know of which has a regular session.

One of my favorite session haunts is about a mile down the road from the last resting place of Chief Francis O'Neill and several members of his family.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Fair enough, I stand corrected. Although I did say, rather speculatively, it was 'A' hotel in Langdale. I didn't specify which as it was so long ago I can't remember. Hardly "how wrong you are" - but feel free to vent your spleen as you see fit - this is only a fun thread on a fun website anyway.

We have a drug information and treatment service right opposite. There's also a big sculpted image of Disraeli on the pub itself: http://www.geocities.com/beaconsfieldsession/beaconsfield.jpg
Oh here's a picture of the pub http://www.geocities.com/beaconsfieldsession/beaconsfield1.jpg
Landmarks - Mill Road Broadway: http://www.geocities.com/beaconsfieldsession/busstop.jpg
Opposite lots of interesting shops, including Cambridge Resale - favourite place for amps and beat-up guitars, violas (sorry, llig) banjos etc http://www.geocities.com/beaconsfieldsession/millroad2.jpg
Mill Road Bridge: http://www.geocities.com/beaconsfieldsession/millroadbridge.jpg
over which you will find Gees (a proper landmark) for all your electronics bits and pieces: http://www.geocities.com/beaconsfieldsession/gees.jpg

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

The late landlady of the Colpitts, Durham (UK), Irene, was a landmark behind the bar there, which was another one - a curved, handsome Victorian edifice (not unlike Irene). We could have lock-ins and more or less help ourselves when she'd gone up to bed, but every so often there'd be a thwack on her bedroom floor with a slipper if we made too much noise.

I think I'm right in saying the Acropolis was in full view of a cafe where I played tunes with a couple of buskers in Athens when I was living there in 1979.

Re: Any Landmarks near your Session(s)?

Ah shucks KML not venting anything splenic. just correcting your assumption that it had to be the same hotel because you doubted there were many other hotels there, thats all. Please accept my apology if I seemed to jump down your throat. Langdale holds a special place in my heart and I can't help singing its praises any chance I get. A day up the hills and an evening in any of its hotels/ hostelries is one of my favourite outings. :-)

Morro Bay, California ... Step out the side entry to our venue, The Morro Bay Brewing Company, and you have a full view of theharbor, the monolithic Morro Rock, and the Pacific Ocean. The sunset views are incredible!

This photo barely captures the essence ...

Sorry I picked *you* up wrong, Flossie. These misunderstandings often crop up on this 1-dimensional medium. I always used to look down on the use of those smileys but am increasingly seeing their benefit! :-)
I agree Langdale is indeed a special place (from what I remember....) I'm hoping to be up in South Lakes this Feb. Doubt if I'll be up around Langdale though.
