I discovered Father Ted the same night the actor that plays Ted died of a heart attack at his own dinner party. We were renting a house in Ennis for 3 weeks and stayed home one Saturday night to see what the Irish watch on the "telly." This absolutely hilarious comedy called "Father Ted" came on and had us in stitches. Then at the end the screen went to a photo of Ted (Dermot Morgan) with his date of birth and death under it. We didn't know what to think and wondered if it was part of the show. Then the presenter came on and announced the sad news. It was very strange going from laughing and feeling like we discovered an incredibly funny show to feeling all sad and depressed.
The next day I went to the video shop in Ennis and inquired about getting the season of "Father Ted" on tape. The lady behind the counter looked at me sternly and said, "Well... if you like that sort of thing." Evidently not all Irish people see the humor in it I guess.
I believe that Dermot Morgan himself made no claims to know what was going on in the show, he just got given the script and got on with it ! But he had been trying a priest character as one part of his stand-up act for many years before Father Ted.
And his two younger supporting actors have done well for themselves since the show had to end. Haven't actually seen Father Jack about much, but his catchphrases often come to mind, it's the Tourettes Syndrome in me I guess.
I first heard about "Father Ted" from set dance master, Aidan Vaughan, from Miltown Malbay when he was visiting the states. He asked if I had ever seen it but at that time it hadn't been played here in the Philadelphia area. Shortly after it started showing up on PBS stations and became a BIG hit within our local Irish circles. I've probably seen every episode but the one I love the absolute best is when Ted and Dougal go on holidays in the caravan and a priest friend of theirs shows up with several young wans in tow and invade the caravan. Hilarious! I believe the series is out on DVD's which can be found at Border's Bookstores in the U.S.
i can assure you... all irish people love Fr. Ted.
we're not all holy joes and priest huggers....
and anyway if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at??
What really annoys me is that there was only ever 15 edisodes of Father ted.....
it's a shame....
but al the same i hope they don't do a remake....
they always end up ruining good shows by re-doin them....
just look at Dr. Who!
Well... all Irish people accept that lady in the shop in Ennis who sold me the first season on tape anyway. When I returned to the states and had the tapes coverted in 1998 no one here had heard of Father Ted yet. We had a couple of Father Ted parties to view them. Needless to say, it was a huge hit.
Isn't that the one I linked at the top of the thread? I thought it would be appropriate for an Irish music site! And for the Christmas season, of course, there is this one:
nice traditional Irish tune

Has nobody here seen Killinaskully? Or do you all just hate it - I think it's brilliant!
