Best Recordings of the Year 2006

Best Recordings of the Year 2006

I know lots of great recordings were released this year too, but haven't got any yet. Discuss what do you think is the best one so that I could get an idea of what to add to my wish list.

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

Crosscurrents -Terence o Flaherty , Start of a Dream- Don Stiffe, Edel Fox and Ronan O Flaherty.- mighty music! As for DVDs you can't get much better than 'Geantrai'-live session recordings from the TV series, Christy Moore-Live at the Point 2006 and Sharon Shannon -live at dolans. Happy New Year- Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!!

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

Breda Keville's The Hop Down would go high on my list and the Junior Crehan collection a well.

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

Claire Watts' and Gerry Hegarty's "Off She Goes" is one of my favorites for this year. I'm sure there are lots of others...I'll have to put my mind to it!

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

I'll second the recommendations for Edel Fox & Ronan O'Flaherty, and Breda Keville. To that I'll add Kitty Hayes & Peter Laban's "They'll Be Good Yet". Will buy the Junior Crehan set in Custy's this week, as well as the John Joe Casey release.

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

Issued when the year was on it's last legs the Pavee Point publication of the Rainey's music on CD should be way up there as well as far as my list is concerned

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

Paul Brock and Enda Scahill's "Humdinger" is about as good as you'll get. Great early 20's USA stlye, powewrful playing and great accompanyment and arrangements.

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

i'm with kilfarboy on breda keville and the junior crehan double set, and would add the kitty hayes/peter laban release, the john joe casey release, and as an "a-for-effort" newcomer gem, the martin o'brien concertina cd of east care tunes.....

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

The way it looks at this point... Breda Keville is going to win. Is anyone else keeping score here. Will there be an award ceremony? Can we get her to come on line and accept a prize... make an acceptance speech maybe?

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

I've just found this list: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/thelatesession/1119526.html I wonder why Marcas O'Murchu is not mentioned.

Re: Best Recordings of the Year 2006

I'll happily third that lovely recording by Edel Fox & Ronan O'Flaherty.

Ceemonster, thanks for the nod on 'An Crann Carraige', the Martin O'Brien Concertina CD.
I found one track to listen to at:

http://www.allcelticmusic.com/index.html?s=genres&m=genres&c=viewitem&m=shop&nationality=irish&genre_id=20&item_id=5887#

Very enjoyable, gentle music & such a refreshing change from the 'frantic pyrotechnicalistic gymnastics' we have come to expect from some of the big names associated with the 'wee box'!

If I must mention another, I'll go with Kitty Hayes & Peter Laban's.

Breda Keville maybe the winner. And after John Gannon, Edel Fox & Ronan O'Flaherty, Junior Crehan, Kitty Hayes & Peter Laban, James Carty.
