Trigered by the earlier Audacity question: What's the cheapest (or even free) method to create overdubbed sound files. i.e., where I play and record a tune on my banjo, and then add guitar backing. Not looking for a commercial quality recording here: this is just for fun.
I tried using Audacity to blend two separate tracks, but lining them up in time isn't very precise, and it's messy to create the second track so it is perfectly synchronized with the first.
Is there some freeware out there that addresses this? Did I mention I'm a cheapskate?
DO YOU SQUEAK WHEN YOU WALK ?
DO YOU RUSH SO MUCH TO PICK THAT 2 PENCE COIN UP OFF THE FLOOR, YOU BANG YOUR HEAD ON THE MANHOLE COVER ?
ARE YOU SCOTTISH ?
ARE YOU YIDDISH ?
But since we're on the subject of racial/national/regional stereotypes, I was reminded of hearing a certain Irishman relating how he had heard someone describe a Yorkshireman as "a Scotsman with all the generosity squeezed out of him".
Yorkshire men I forgot those they are water tight as ducks ar**s.
I know what 'ta want 'tand I want 'tit now.
Tightness or carefullness or economical or whatever exists in all races I am sure there are parts of Ireland where they are known as tight wads, Galway & Derry spring to mind.
I'm glad no-one has any general feel for the Channel Island character, as Channel Islanders are VERY careful with their money.
But then there was this Scots Professor in my old college......he was walking past our lab on his way out one evening, sucking at his pipe, then reversed in, as we were finishing up for the day. "Oh Eddie", he inquired of my boss, "I loaned a box of matches to you earlier this week. I wonder if there might be a few left in it ?" The udergraduates had made a fake pathological specimen from him, a purse suspended in a perspex pot, the labelling explaining it had been removed from his hip pocket whilst under general anaesthetic !
There is a tutorial floating around that will help you
with editing in Audacity. You can use the software
to help you align as well as the graphical (oscilloscope-like traces.

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
Garage Band on the Mac. Its bundled with OSX, so in one sense, its cheap, but not if you don't own a Mac. Its a pretty remarkable piece of software.

Hey Ripthecalico! Maybe you should leave these comments back in the music hall days where they belong

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
I thought Audacity provided everything you need to multitrack yourself. What's missing, grego?

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
grego, forgive me if the following is too freakin obvious, but just to make sure....
Click "Edit" and then click "Preferences..." in the drop-down list.
Click the "Audio I/O" tab, and make sure that the checkbox labeled "Play other tracks while recording new one" is checked.

Ripthecalico - Careful!
But since we're on the subject of racial/national/regional stereotypes, I was reminded of hearing a certain Irishman relating how he had heard someone describe a Yorkshireman as "a Scotsman with all the generosity squeezed out of him".
His words, not mine.

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
As a true blue Yorkshireman, I can confirm that 99% of us can peel a orange in both pockets and not get our thighs wet . . its quite an art.

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
Or even a bit damp.

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
You can peel one orange in both pockets at the same time? And without unzipping them?

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
Took me a while Mickray, but I finally found "Preferences" - it's actually under the "File" menu item. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Poor man's overdubbing
Huh. It's under "Edit" on my version (for PC). Anyway, glad to help.

Audacity should be helpful for all this.
