Microphone Recommendations - Uilleann pipes

I would like to query anyone who has experience micing Uilleann pipes for performance (not studio). I spoke with one very gifted player from County Clare who was using a German-made microphone (can't recall the name but it wasn't one of the well known brands) attached to the top of his chanter and he said that depending on the venue he would also use a second mic near the bottom of the chanter and a third mic attached to the drones. Any experience to share? Recommended mics?

Thanks.

Re: Microphone Recommendations - Uilleann pipes

hi there,
the best sound i've heard from a chanter was 2 Shure Beta 58's on it,one pointed downwards, towards the G and A notes and the second one pointed upwards towards E and F,about 4 or 5 inches away from it.

Re: Microphone Recommendations - Uilleann pipes

I've never miked pipes. Have miked the whistle, and sypmphonic sorts of things.

It strikes me that an extremely narrow field mike wouldn't get the full development of the pipe sound.

I almost think a hypercardoid like AKG's with a tightly controlled gain might do the trick as long as there aren't alot of competing sounds around the pipes.

Try an AKG 3000. Best there is, IMO.

Re: Microphone Recommendations - Uilleann pipes

I have miked U pipes with an AKG 3000 and it did a very nice job. Most any decent large-diaphragm condenser mic with a cardioid pattern will do a good job.

Re: Microphone Recommendations - Uilleann pipes

i've seen pipes with a mic build into the chanter. the piper just plugs into the top of the chanter to amplify it. the set i'm thinking about was made by seth gallagher. ask him. his website is www.uilleann.com

Re: Microphone Recommendations - Uilleann pipes

I have a Mimic for my Overton low whistle with a custom built sleeve. I've tried it unsuccessfully on the NSP and the UP. Best solution I've had for the UP was using a Roland Cube with a separate Mike. Seemed to be appreciated.

I used a shure 58 over the holidays through a Yamaha promix 01 mixer. Worked decently
