Its a reconstruction from an incomplete recording of 'O'Connor Donn Reel' played on one of the very early wax cylinder recordings by a piper.
I think Cathal McConnell might have made the reconstruction. We know now (thanks to advances in sound clean-up technology) that the original tune, as it appears on the cylinder, is quite different. I like both versions.
Harry, the Martin Reilly cylinder is not as incomplete as some copies would have you believe. When Pat Mitchell published his notation from it in An Piobaire I could hardly believe how he could have made it all up. I only had a taped copy I got from Breandan Breathnach at the time, a few strains of notes rising above the static occasionally. A few years ago Pat sent me a cleaned up copy, which made a lot more sense.
This G reel ?
This G reel ?
Does anyone have a name for this one ( only opening bars abc'd). It's track 2 tune 2 on Cian's "Three Shouts From a Hill".
