How good sould I be??

How good sould I be??

I was just over on the "fancy stuff you can do thread" and didn't want to get
two conversations going so i have a couple of questions here.

Firstly, i've been playing the fiddle for about 8 weeks now and I have no idea how
much progress I should have made by now, so heres what I can do.

Tunes I can 'play';

out on the ocean
geese in the bog
matt peoples no. 1
harvest home
Whelans old sow
white haired woman
and of course the kerry polka

I know a few other tunes but not well enough to say I can play them.

My teacher told me that my fingering, rolls and figure of eights and bowing are good
(although I dont feel like I'm pushing the bow, more like chasing after it)

Does this sound like 'normal' progress. I appreciate its hard to give an oppinion without
a sound sample but I'm just a little curious.

Thanks.

John B

I can't hear you so I can't tell how good you are. Just go your own pace and enjoy it. What's the white haired woman?

Re: How good sould I be??

If you can play Geese In The Bog then you have fully 50% of the repertoire under your belt already.

That is, if you know every single tune that goes by the name Geese In The Bog. :-)

Re: How good sould I be??

Try pushing the keys instead of chasing after them.

Re: How good sould I be??

Sounds like you are doing well--that's a decent number of tunes in a short time, especially while you're getting fingering and bowing down. It would probably be difficult to find a standard to judge yourself against--we have come from different places, learned at different ages, been surrounded by different influences. Practice can be hard on people who are not musicians, but I'd like to think that the results can be rewarding for everyone.

Re: How good sould I be??

sounds like your doing well, a tune a weeks not a bad thing to aim for but keep in mind its quality not quantity

Re: How good sould I be??

Sounds to me like you're getting along fine - I've only been playing since September '05, and I don't think I was on to rolls by then. (I'd been shown them, but doing them was another matter.)

Comments about quality not quantity are good; I've learned a number of tunes but I wouldn't say I know them all well, and there are damn few I can play at anything close to dance or session speed, but I also know it'll come in time.
