tunes that you can recommend for a new flute/recorder player....

Wassup People!

I'm glad you've created a discussion for traditional Irish music.

Anyways I'm just new in this whole stuff and I'm interested to learn how to play the flute.

I have a recorder and I'm wondering if you could recommend any easy tabs for learning. =) =) =)

Cheers,
red

Re: tunes that you can recommend for a new flute/recorder player....

Stick to the flute. Recorders are not generally used in Irish Traditional Music.
Look at the tunes section on this site - look also at the most commonly requested ones in the members section.
Look at the sessions section. Go along to a local one and sit in without playing anything the first couple of times to get an idea what is going on.
Give yourself anywhere between 2-20 years to get good.

Oh - I see you live in the Phillipines. I also noticed there are no sessions there.....so I'm not quite sure how to help you - ideas anyone?

Give the 'Search' tab above in the Discussions list a try. But in the meantime, here are some threads and assorted things that might interest you:

Oh yes, and consider learning ABC notation, that weird TAB you gave from the Corrs discussion group is useless...

Re: tunes that you can recommend for a new flute/recorder player....

Get a tin whistle, it is an easy jump from recorder to that, and an inexpensive way to start--whistle playing is better prep for flute playing than your recorder as whistle and keyless flute fingerings are the same. For beginner tunes, jigs like My Darlings Asleep and Out on the Ocean are good, so are polkas like Sullivans and Egans.
Enjoy!

Good on yuh Al... The whistle is good finger exercise for just about any instrument you might want to progress to...and it is portable, and it can be mutted easily, and if you sit on it, it will often still play, or you can get a replacement for just a few pence...

There are some decent tutorials out there to get you started too:

Re: tunes that you can recommend for a new flute/recorder player....

Thankx, Thankx, Thankx (^^,)

I'll try to find a tin whistle here. Hopefully I can get one. They have no idea what a tin whistle is (:P)

If I can't get one in the meantime is the flute can be used as a substitute for learning?

Are the flute and the whistle's fingering similar?

Re: tunes that you can recommend for a new flute/recorder player....

Whistle and Irish (aka simple system) flute fingerings are the same. However, if you can't get a whistle, you probably can't get an Irish flute either, and you may end up with a silver flute. The fingerings on that are a bit different, but the switch wasn't difficult for me.
