Songs in Scots Gaelic

Songs in Scots Gaelic

I am looking for songs in Scots Gaelic. Any ideas about where they may be hiding? Thanks.

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

On the albums of Capercaillie, a classy Scottish band going since the 80s, whose singer Karen Mathieson (spelling?) sings many Gaelic songs. I don't know if the CD's come with the words and translations of these - I rather think the cassettes did. She is probably the best-known Scottish Gaelic singer recording at present, but won't be the only one.

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

You don't specify whether you want recordings of just lyrics.
If it's lyrics you're after, there might be a few here

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

Try Greentrax (Penicuik based if I remember correctly) for some excellent Gaelic song CDs; e.g.
Kathleen McInnes, Cathy-Ann McPhee, Allan MacDonald & Mairead Stewart, and many more.
Also the Skye-based Macmeanma label has Arthur Cormac, Cliar and others.

All the lyrics are included on at least the Kathleen McInnes cd, possibly on some of the others too - I'm too lazy to go looking just now:-)

If you want to get some idea of good pronunciation, I think I'm correct in saying that all are native Gaelic speakers, although from different locations.

Good luck.

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

look for Julie Fowlis's CD she's very very good we saw her a couple of weeks ago singing with John McCusker and others.

I think she's from South Uist and has a voice to die for, singing exclusively in Scots Gaelic. She's also a fine whistle player

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

Also Maeve MacKinnon's debut CD will be out soon too. Keep an eye out for that.

If I was to be flippant about your question then I might suggest they were hiding in Gaelic Scotland!! :-)

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

Thanks to all for the help. Yes, I guess I could have been a little more specific as to what I was seeking. I apologize for that, but y'all came through for me despite my best efforts.
Thanks, too, No Cause For Alarm for the humor. We literalists must stick together, eh.

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

Christine Primrose is one of the finest Gaelic singers I know of. And a wonderful teacher as well.

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

For a book, you might get Anne Lorne Gillies' 'Songs of Gaelic Scotland' which contains word and music for many of the best-known songs. She has really good, well-informed notes on each one, too.

Re: Songs in Scots Gaelic

My favorite Scots Gaelic singing group is CLIAR. They sing only in Scots Gaelic. As far as I'm concerned, Mary Ann Kennedy is one of the BEST, and her song "Domhnall nan Domhnall" is fabulous! Here's a link to a website where you can order their CDs--and others.
