The Ben Nevis on a Wednesday night. Lots of very talented young musicians. Not much room to sit down but then best just to stand at the bar and take it all in. Great music and a friendly bunch.
Not trying to be a smart arse here......but; why are the World Irish Dance Championships being held in Scotland. You might aswell hold the highland games in swahili.
mmm.
About one-third of the population of the West of Scotland claim some Irish extraction (mine goes back about 3 generations and is probably only 1/4 or 1/8th!)
Bob, You need to check out Sharkey's in the Gorbals District of Glasgow. If I heard correctly, it may be now owned by the McHugh Family, who are fine musician's and products of AnComdhail Irish Dance teacher Anna McHugh, and Tyrone fiddler Jimmy McHugh.
Congrats on a good Oireachtas...... lol, I may have even played for your daughter at some of the feisanna..
The Sharkey's session was always on a Monday evening, certainly many years ago when I was last there. Mully, I'd no idea that the McHughs might have bought Sharkey's - quite understandable if they've done so. Can anyone confirm?
The best music shop for trad music is near george's cross underground station. It's called Folk Revolution http://www.folkrevolution.co.uk/.
For sessions etc pick up a copy of the gig guide in any decent pub or tourist info it will tell you where all the sessions are. There is at least one every evening.
There used to be a place in Parnie Street that did a fair amount of trad CDs & LPs but I'm not sure its still there.
If you have kids with you then a good session to go to would be Babbity's on a saturday afternoon (well it usually starts about 16:00 and goes on until closing time).
Anybody head anything recently about Folk Revolution?
I've passed by in the hope of looking at some mandolin cases, but the shutters have been down the last few time at what would normally be opening hours.. and the website appears to be down too... :(
bt, children are not allowed in bars after 8 in Scotland and some bars have no childrens license. Definitely visit the Ben Nevis in the West End on Wednesday night it'll likely be 75% Scottish tunes but some Irish too - it's usually a very high standard. http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/115
Another great session on a Friday night is in the Ivory Hotel below the Langside Monument. It is effectively the session that used to be in the Vicky Bar. As such it is very Irish. They are a lovely bunch of people that attend the session and the music is of an exceptional standard.
GLASGOW or BUST!
GLASGOW or BUST!
I will be in Glasgow for World Irish Dance Championships
(my precious daughter placed 10th in the Southern Region Oireachtas and qualifies for Worlds!)
This is big for us....never been across the pond.
We all play a bit, where can we go to hear some good tunes?
Any good B&B catering to the music crowd?
Is there a good traditional music shop in Glasgow?

Re: GLASGOW or BUST!
I think the clue might be in the title: "World"
As well as that, Glasgow probably has one of the biggest imigrant populations of Irish anywhere, many of them from Donegal.

Also Waxy O'Conners on a Sunday afternoon, kids should be allowed in there. http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/470
There are good sessions every night, you can put Glasgow into the search function in the Sessions section of this site.

Re: GLASGOW or BUST!
Guys, I think the original enquiry about session sin this thread was made in 2006.
For some reason the recent post by neal has appeared as part of this thread.
Haven't been into FR for a couple of months, so I'm afraid I don't have any news.
