Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
Any wound E string will whistle less. Many people use the Eudoxa E, and a few people I know use the Kaplan, and they all sound great. Right now, I'm using the Pirastro Wondertone Solo E with a set of Obligato's, and it whistles very little and seems to compliment the tone of the other three strings more than the plain steel E that came with the set.
Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
I'll second the Wondertone Solo recommendation. I'm using one of those on my fiddle with a set of Evah Pirazzi's right now, and they seem to compliment each other very well.
Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
There's Thomastik's Vision Titanium E (it's titanium-coated so it looks black and is almost invisible in some lighting). A powerful clear tone. It's not wound, but I haven't had it whistle on either of my fiddles.
Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
the gold e in the Evah set is nice e..it shimmers and is very lively and does not whistle and seems to sound good with the set......if it does whistle, adjust your bowing...another e that would compliment the set is a Jargar Forte...the Wondertone solo also gets high marks, but I prefer the gold Wondertone.
Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
if you're willin te pay a bit more, Pirastro Olivs are very nice. i've had mine a while, they're nice and broke in. the e hasn't whistled yet, and i've had it a solid 7 months.
Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
Thomastik Superflexible chrome wound (the one with "kunstler stahlsaiten" on the packet) are the best E-string in the world. -Great tone and practically indestructible.
Re: Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
I've tired the Kaplan, but it seems rather loud. I really like the Wondertone E also. I just got the silver coated one, and I am still happy with it after a week or two.
Re: Alternative e string to complement the Evah Pirazzi's?
One of my classical friends goes two or three times a year to string quartet workshops given by a professional string quartet. He told me a couple of days ago that the leader of this particular quartet changes the strings on his violin every two weeks. Well, I can understand a busy full-time professional violinist changing strings every couple of months or so, but once a fortnight! (shakes head in wonder). Apparently, the other members of the quartet don't go to these lengths.
Which brings me to the question: how often do we (in ITM) change our strings, and do we always stick to the same brand?
Speaking for myself, I change strings about every 6 months, but hitherto haven't usually replaced them with the same. This has enabled me to try out different makes, and get some sort of comparison. However, I'm now homing in on a short-list of three - Obligato, Vision Titanium, and Zyex (in alphabetical order) - although that short-list could be modified if I try Evahs in a few months time. The one string I tend not to change if I like it is the E - I never seem to wear them out - and my current choice on both my fiddles is the Vision Titanium E, which I think I'll stick with for the foreseeable future.
Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
Alternative e string to compliment the Evah Pirazzi's?
Love the strings, the e string is meh though. I think I've only tried the golden e string so I don't know much about the other two.
Kaplan non-whistling e string, perhaps?
Cheers,
Armand
