Humours of Tullagh

Humours of Tullagh

Have looked everywhere. Can anyone help with a source for the music?

Re: Humours of Tullagh

Look a little harder, Jim :-) ...you'll find it here in the tune archives under Humours of Tulla. It's a very common session tune and widely available on the web and in most tune collections under that spelling.

Re: Humours of Tullagh

A great tune Jim and forms part of a very memorable Joe Cooley set where it's followed by The Skylark and Roaring Mary.

Jim, here's the link to get you to one version of the tune on this site. Ther;s another setting in D also. This one's in G.

Re: Humours of Tullagh

Tulla, by the way, Jim, is a small town in East Clare. PJoe Hayes lived there (and of course his son Martin as well). I got to hear PJoe play Humors of Tulla at one of the regular sessions at Peppers in Feakle -- it was right before he died, and I shall treasure the memory.

Re: Humours of Tullagh

Zina ... P.Joe and Martin are from Maghera, Cahir, Feakle about 10 - 15 miles from Tulla. Mary MacNamara and Andrew MacNamara are from Tulla.

Re: Humours of Tullagh

Actually, Bernie, PJoe himself told me that he lived in Tulla -- perhaps he moved in when he got older. It wasn't Martin's childhood home, he said, though. :)

Re: Humours of Tullagh

(or perhaps he figured I, a bloody Yank tourist, wouldn't know where Maghera was, and so just told me Tulla as the easiest way out. *grin*)

Maghera Mountain

Yes, Martin Hayes is from Maghera, and that's why he composed the nice slow reel "Maghera Mountain," which is not posted here yet. It is a pitty the tune is not friendly to my instrument, whistle.

Re: Humours of Tullagh

P.Joe was born, bred & died at home on the family farm at Maghera.

Re: Humours of Tullagh

That explains a lot. I wondered why Martin Hayes would compose a tune named after a town in Derry. Incidentally, how is it (Maghera) pronounced? And what does it mean, come to that?
