The racket is a type of bassoon in a pot. There is a double reed at one end of a very long wooden tube. The tube is folded over and over and squashed into a cylindrical box about 30 cm high and 15 cm in diameter. Finger holes down the two sides open into the appropriate places in the tube.
We've got four gigs in December and more lined up for next year so some people like it.We got three encores at our last gig. It's so nice to get helpful criticism.
ha, there's another thread close to this one where someone asks whether if it's traditional or not matters. My initial response was no, I don't give a damn. But after seeing that dafyd has posted thirty odd of his own compositions into this tune data base, I'm wondering if I was right.
It's all part of life's rich tapestry.I've always agreed with Big Bill Broonzy's dictum,"It's all folk music,I ain't never heard no hoss singing".Or playing the fiddle, come to that.
I have to say, I still have little brown spots on my monitor thanks to reading llig's reply to the initial posting (I was halfway through a mug of coffee at the time!),
If Zina was around, she would have said *splorf* or some such. You are very funny, ilig!!
As to the band, not really my cup of tea (or coffee) but thanks for posting anyway...
I don't know why I posted the link to my boy's band here. I'd got back from the pub where I'd had 4 pints of Hobgoblin and it seemed like a good idea. The relevance has since escaped me...
Did it occur to anyone to consider that one might react "Bloody hell what a racket" to indicate that he/she does not like the music, without implying any opinion about its quality.
So it seems odd to ask if Mr Llig thinks he could do better.
We've all been playing for a lot longer but the band started officially about six weeks ago.Two months ago I was invited to play at someone's birthday party in a bar in Antwerp.Tom,Lou and Howard were there.I'd played with Tom before, but not the others. We jammed away, and the next day someone called Howard to ask if they could book the band.
"What band?" replied Howard.
The upshot was that we played the gig and two more gigs came out of that and it just started rolling.Every time we've performed we get one or two more gigs.I just got a call asking us to play at a festival in Belgium next August.
I didn't think of it that way showaddydadito, you might well be right. It was just that "racket" seemed to be such a pejorative term that I took umbrage, perhaps unjustly.
Basil: Hallo dear... just doing the picture.
Sybil: Don't forget the menu.
Basil: ...I beg your pardon?
Sybil: Don't forget the menu.
Basil: I thought you said you wanted... Right! [puts the picture down] I'll do the menu.
Sybil: You could have had them both done by now if you hadn't spent the whole morning
skulking in there listening to that racket.
[goes out]
Basil: Racket? That's *Brahms*! Brahms's Thrid Racket!! ...[to himself] The whole morning!
...I had two bars.
Tish, the reason why rackets fell into disuse was that there was no way of getting moisture out of them and the insides used to rot away. Are they still made and has someone found a way round the problem?
Well, Dafydd, that's not my "Cup of Tea" but good on ya anyway. When I lived in Chicago I used to go round and hear the old bluesmen playing acoustic sets at 2 AM, so I have some fondness for the music. To my ear the recording sounds a little muddy, but I know from my band how hard it is to get the sound right.
Ottery, I thought your son's band sounded pretty good. Is "Tony the Torso" an original composition? I wish I played the bass...
And now it looks like BegF has a helping hand in defending llig...good on ye showaddydadito...lligs army of musical galactico's. They are perfect in every way....according to themselves
HI - I actually do have a collection of rackets!! And yes, they can sound loud depending on how you set up the reed, but it's a narrow-bore reed instrument so they're never *that* loud.
And yes, someone has found a way round the "rotting" problem, which is to mould the central bit (that contains the bores) in resin.
The "early music shop" sells them - and I used to use mine as a drone bass when playing in sessions - each of them has about 1-1/2 octaves range, fully chromatic. And the bass one, about a foot high, goes down to the bottom "F" of the piano keyboard. So they're really quite surprising things when you first see them as you expect them to be quite high-pitched.
They're quite tiring on the lips as you have to pinch the reed between them, and you are constantly trying to get rid of the excess air in your lungs as they don't use much air. It's a bit like trying to hold your breath but push it out at the same time.
srt, thanks for that about the 'Odyssey' - Tony the Torso is one of their compositions.
They've been going a bit longer than dafydd's band though, despite their tender years - Elliott and Tom have played together (mostly at house sessions) since they were six!
Dafydd, you should feel grateful for Mr. Gill's 'mercy' - it immediately gets half the site rooting for you!
I see from your profile you don’t play in sessions…. I would encourage sooner participation rather than later, however whenever you do make the step I would recommend that you not use the approach you’ve used on this site with regards to your opinions of people from your initial first impression. It would be a good idea to try and learn from everyone especially those that you don’t agree with. Both Showdaddy and Llig would be folk that I haven’t always agreed with but have learnt a lot from.
I actually get on very well with people. Believe it or not I have manners, patience, common sense (most of the time) and I'd chat to the man from the moon.
I wouldn't dream of being so abrupt with someone I just met at a session, but on the other hand I wouldn't dream of being shown the disrespect Llig treats musicians with. If I was to attend a session and the bodhran player was told he did not play an instrument and was slagged off, I'd be angry, and then I may say something.
Anyway, I have seen a number of Lligs posts and they often consist of a smart arsed comment at the expense of some other musician.
This post started with someone posting a link to their music and the first reply was Llig with a derogatory remark (regardless of what way you interpret "bloody hell what a racket", it comes across negatively).
I can only judge Llig by his posts, and the impression that I get is the impression that I get.
Well, whatever you think of me, or might think of me if you met me, your description is fair. I can be a bit of a smart arse, but mostly it's just do do with speaking my mind. A lot of utter toss is posted here quite often and it's just red rags to me. I'm sorry, but I'm just not the kind of huy who says, "it's not my cup of tee". And if someone says something like "I wanna bodhran, money is no object." Well yes, I'm inclined to be a bit of a c u n t.
I've never had a cup of "tee".And I can't quite follow the non sequitur about the bodhran.I wasn't fishing for complements when I posted the thread,I just thought that some members might be interested in what i've been getting up to.We've played four gigs in the past six weeks and got encores every time.We must be doing something right. The recordiings are a bit raw,we sound a lot different on stage. If someone doesn't like it,that's their perogative,no-one is forced to listen to it.I suspect that Jeremy will have something to say about the reference to the female pudenda.
Thats very honest of you Llig. You speak your mind with reagards to certain subjects, and I suppose your posts are like a red rag to me...hence I speak my mind. Maybe we are not so different after all
Admittedly, he doesn't tend to be overly civil much of the time, and he and I have crossed swords quite a bit. Right, Michael? (Fish. Barrels. As though you're not?)
Interesting that the unity inspired by Fearless Bruce didn't last long. Family politics writ large. Gotta love this place.
On topic, I don't have the software to listen to the .wma files, but I was able to get some of the solo .mp3s to play. I like the way you caught the dark minor quality of Erin Go Bragh. The file seemed to run rather slow, though; not sure if that was my computer or the speed of the recording.
Dafydd, my internet computer is a Mac and although I'm reasonably proficient on MS software due to years of work experience my Mac literacy could be unfavorably compared to a six year old who's just barely able to work out that c-a-t spells cat.
Dafydd, I can't seem to get it to identify itself. it just pops up a little grey boom-box "play" bar, with the start-stop-fastforward-reverse buttons. It appears to be built in to the browser, which is Safari.
