bodhran question

bodhran question

Hello all

anybody could help me? I want to buy a nice bodhran. Both O'kane or McAuley seem interesting for me. shipping costs and purchasing and terms are ok with both.

price is not an issue, I want a nice instrument.

which maker shall I go for?

Re: bodhran question

What a shame. Price is not an issue, where as the time and effort to learn to play music obviously is.

Re: bodhran question

Thanks,

I said price is not an issue because they are more or less the same for a tuneable models

Of course, price is an issue if they were more much different

you are right, time and efford for learn music is an issue

Re: bodhran question

Pay no mind to the self appointed God. I’ve not played any of Paul McAuley's bodhráns but Paul Marshall, a well versed percussionist whose opinion I trust, has reviewed them compared to Seamus’ work here: http://www.bodojo.com/reviews/mcauley.htm.

Peace,
Ed

Re: bodhran question

I say, wait a month and order a drum from Rob Forkner metloef.com - his drum are not nice, they great,
you can choose size of a drum (12",14",15",16" diameter)
you can choose a skin you want on it (kangaroo, goat, and lambeg )
visit his website, ask few questions.

if not you can always try bawarian bodhrans by Christian Hedwitschak bodhranmaker.de and his special model signed by Rolf Wagels - combination of mr O'Kane bodhrans (15,5" diameter, lambeg skin head) with mr Forkners (rim is made very similar)
you can see then on Rolf's website

Re: bodhran question

Llibert, I can endorse Padre's recomendations.
This is probably not in your neighbourhood but if anyone else is thinking about getting a bodhran in the N.W.England area, hang on (if you can) till after Xmas.

Rolf Wagels and Christian Hedwitschak will be in Manchester in February. They will be appearing at the Royal Northern College of Music's 'Day of Percussion'. Rolf will be giving a lecture/demo and Christian will be there with his trade stand.
Both will be around to chat about bodhrans, tippers etc.

learn a musical instrument instead

Re: bodhran question

Thanks a lot for all you answers. Specially those who answered my questions thanks thanks thanks!

Is not the bodhran a musical instrument? I don't understand. There's a lot of pepole who likes to play without any drum sounding or what?

for your information, I play uilleann pipes as a second insturment. Fighting with reeds in order to stay in tune, not to annoy the fiddlers or concertina players is a great issue

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Re: bodhran question

Don't worry Llibert, of course it's a musical instrument.

The 'silly' comments are from people just having a little bit of innocent fun. I think they consider it craic.

Re: bodhran question

Yes my english is not so good for jokes. I also was joking in my answer, but is true, I play uilleann pipes, but is my first instrument, and I really like bodhran.

I think play nice rythms with bodhran needs a lot of efford and practice as all instruments.

Re: bodhran question

Just ignore those posts Llibert. I have a drum made by Eckermann (from Austria) and it's wonderful. I highly recommend his instruments.

"self appointed god" - recognition at last

# Posted on November 29th 2006 by showaddydadito

Re: bodhran question

Eckermann's drums are really good
but Metloef and Chewitschak Rold Wagels model have better heads, lambeg skin on a bodhran will give you the best sound

Llibert if you want to buy bodhran remeber that smaller the diameter is then it's easier to control the skin with the left hand

Re: bodhran question

To each their own Padre. I haven't played all the drums listed, but I've heard quite a few of them and I've always been impressed with the range of pitches people get out of an Eckermann. I've always like the sound more than others.

But they're all great drums -- picking out "the best" is nearly impossible. Everyone has different preferences. Which is why, Llibert, it's best to try them out or hear others play them before you decide what it is you really want.

Re: bodhran question

I've seen, hit and heard others play and discuss the merits of Davy Stuart bodhrans - their reputation is as good as the best in the world.

Re: bodhran question

Eoin Leonard www.belgarth.com he will make you a custom bodhran that will last for a long time and will sound great. Contact him give him the dimensions you want and he'll make it. Ignore the website designs as that website hasnt been updated for a while. I have used his now for years and have never found anything that comes near for quality of build, tone and price. and he can really build frames properly.

Re: bodhran question

Step one is to start with any old cheap drum.
Two decide what you like about it. Three decide what else you would like a drum to do for YOU. Four buy one that fills the criteria. All skins are different even same species, how they are put on changes the behavior and the choice of softening agents (secret bodhran maker's business) is the finishing step.
Buy a drum from a local maker as he will be strongly influenced by local weather parameters (or buy one of mine).
You should also get one of my tippers, everything else is a lump of wood

Re: bodhran question

Gill, once again you show what a complete %$%$ you are....a self righteous goon with a superiority complex.

Geoff you portray yourself no better.

Queue BegF to Michaels rescue :-)

Re: bodhran question

Ireland78 - why you no put anything in your profile?

You too good for us?
Too bad for us?
Too lazy?
At least Michael has the courtesy to give us some description of himself. You can tell from his profile what sort of a man (or woman) he (or she) is.

By the way - its spelled %$%$£.

Re: bodhran question

Best buy:

It's even got a map on it incase you get lost!

Now that's value for money!!! :)

I hear the ones with the drawings on them are the best.

Re: bodhran question

Hey - look at the description at the top of that page

It says Irish Musical Bodhran.

That'd be a first then.

Ah sure I'll go to hell now.

I just hope I dont have to sit next to Michael Gill.

Re: bodhran question

FAO Showaddydadito

I have updated my profile....I suppose theres no real harm in it.

I have neither an inferiority nor superiority complex, and I'm not lazy.

Do you tell the bodhran player in your band that they don't play a musical instrument? Or do you just dislike other peoples hypocrisy?

# Posted on December 1st 2006 by ireland78

Re: bodhran question

By hypocrisy do you mean in the way you might call someone a C*nt because you think they’re rude ?

http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/11751

Opps…aren’t I supposed to be minding my own business like you told me ?

# Posted on December 1st 2006 by BegF

Re: bodhran question

But I don't make a point of stating in my profile that I dislike hyprocisy.......

# Posted on December 1st 2006 by ireland78

Re: bodhran question

in this thread: http://thesession.org/discussions/display/11870, it appears the skin drum has been around since the 10th century, not necessarily in Irish music

interesting

Re: bodhran question

Patience Michael, is a virtue. Too quick of the mark this time.
I am still laughing at him coming back with "I play pipes as a SECOND instrument". Absolutely priceless.
I can imagine Lilbert sitting in the pub, as a member of the pipers elite, making disparaging comments about "lowly fiddle players", "Why can't they take the time to learn a real instrument?" and then producing a bodhran.
Absolutely the funniest thing ever on this site.

To answer the question, Eamon Maguire in Belfast still makes the best, and cheapest, drums.
As played by bliss.

# Posted on December 1st 2006 by bodhran bliss

Re: bodhran question

I don't think I would use the word "cheap" to describe big Eamon's bodhráns, as it makes them sound bad; "inexpensive" would probably be a better term.

I was only messing with that touristy yoke off Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.ie/Irish-Musical-10-Bodhran-Ireland-Map-Drum-Percussion_W0QQitemZ110061834269QQihZ001QQcategoryZ93771QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

just incase anyone has their sarcasm detectors switched to off.

Re: bodhran question

Whuh - - - uh . . . whuh . . .

Oh I see - someone with no sense of humour. We do get them sometimes.

I'd have thought the lines:
"self appointed god" - recognition at last

and

"By the way - its spelled %$%$£."

and

"ah sure I'll go to hell now - I hope I don't have to sit next to michael gill"

would have been seen in the light of humour - but if the light isn't on, then I guess they won't.

Still don't see where even the most uptight could find hypocrisy in it though.

Whatever. Some people are like that.
