Value of a fiddle

Value of a fiddle

I was going through ebay when I found this gem. However I have no idea what it would be worth.

Here's the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-Mother-of-Pearl-Inlay-Violin-Bow-Case-Parts_W0QQitemZ250051103584QQihZ015QQcategoryZ119026QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Re: Value of a fiddle

Nice inlay.

The Violin looks like an older Student model, E Euroepan? If so the Inlay to the back would have softened the tone a bit.

Bear in mind some of those E European student models can be very very good value and sound great,

I would not buy it, but a person wanting to own the inlay might. If you are more interested in using it as a musical instrument I suggest you try first before you part with any money.

Re: Value of a fiddle

Looked like quite a good purchase at the price, but the trouble with eBay (apart from not being able to see it in real life) is that people are really clueless about how to photograph stuff. I've bought quite a few fiddles on ebay but have had a few nasty surprises just lately.

I used to be forgiving, but now I wonder, just how hard can it be to take a good photo?

OK I know it's sold now anyway, so it's a moot point, but this one's better than some photos. Even so, you can't really tell if all the beading is present all the way round. There are a lot of clueless sellers out there, and that's a big waste of time when you're buying. Particularly with inlay, if there are bits missing or rattling, it can be pricey to repair them.

The most clueless sellers are the ones who also, unfortunately, often leave you really damaging feedback. We have been waiting for two months for a book we bought, and have just seen someone else leave feedback that they waited two months, only to have the seller really insult them and leave negative feedback. It's unfortunate that you have little if no redress against the ignorant!!

Rant over.

Re: Value of a fiddle

I don't think the issue is "clueless" sellers, but ones whose intent is to mislead...there are few "gems" out on e-bay anymore, and one needs a good eye to find them. The inlay on this fiddle isn't even any good...just chunks of stuff stuffed into crudely gouged out holes.

There are some nicer inlay fiddles around, and they are Eastern European for the most part...this just isn't one of them...
