After finishing a two week tour of Ireland and sitting in on about 8 pub sessions.. I can truely pick the best and the worst...
So the winner is Kelly's Celler in Belfast Sat night crew. These guys know how to do it right. It reminded me of why I love this music.. The tops for sure..
And the worst ..Matt Malloys well we all know where it is. Ive never seen a bigger group of stuck up musicians in my life I don't think I even heard anyone talk to each other. Maybe it was they were all trying to impress the big MM sitting at the bar...what a joke. The guys playing bluegrass in the bar nextdoor where having a much better time..
I know where im going next year....
Maybe you got a wrong impression of why they were silent...
A young Jewish student (these are 1920's) gets on a train, and upon entering a compartment he is thrilled to see two greatest rabbis of the country sitting in there! He sits down next to them, waiting to see what happens. But the time goes on, hours pass and nothing happens at all. Finally, disillusioned, he says: "I am so disappointed, oh great rabbis. I was hoping for some eloquent and enlightening discussion between two such renowned scholars as you, and all there is is the dull silence!". One of the rabbis turns to the student and says: "You see, my son, we are two greatest rabbis in this country. He knows everything and I know everything. So what are we supposed to discuss?"
Funny... I stay in one place for 2 or 3 weeks when I go to Ireland and I still don't feel like I've seen all the sessions in just that area let alone know which one is best. The sessions change from night to night and it's nearly impossible to determine what the average session experience is in any given pub unless you live there.
Nevertheless Jack I still think that visiting musicians experiences of a session can be very interesting to others even though it must be taken in context - yes it is just a snapshot view.
It helps if you know the musical ability/personality of the person reporting their experiences as this can have a strong effect on the way they were treated at the session.
I'm headed to Ireland next year in September/October and would love to hear the experiences of others in relation to visiting sessions before I decide where to go, as there's not much in the way of Festivals at that time of year.
I do think its interesting the way that the title is out of all. Even if you lived there you'd never be able to go to every session - there are just far too many.
Bit uncharitable to interpret it as meaning "out of all sessions" (in Ireland, the world, the universe etc) instead of the rather more likely "out off all the sessions I went to", isn't it?
Out of all!
Out of all!

Re: Out of all!
I loved Molloy's, but I was there to listen at that time. Too crowded however.

Rabbi and Priest in railway carriage -
Priest : Tell me Rabbi, Jews are not supposed to eat pork. Have you ever tried it?
Rabbi : I will be honest, just once. Tell me Father, Priests are supposed to be celibate, have you ever tried it?
Priest : I will be honest, just once.
Rabbi : Better than pork, isn't it?

Re: Out of all!
Since when did titles have to have much to do with content on threads!

Re: Out of all!
That's what I said, bb, you'd have to live there just to know the sessions in the town you're in.
