Let me know whether you can identify the traditional Irish tune (if it is, in fact, an identifiable tune) that has been used for "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" by Dropkick Murphys, which has been used in the movie The Departed.

Sounds like sad, punk influenced, pseudo irish c**p to me. The tune, behind the bellowing, sounds more Scottish in form though not in style. It's got no soul, although to give it it's due, it probably goes down great with drunken yobs!
I love it But the tune isn't really worthy of that title... the 'b part' is just the same a bit higher etc. Very simple. But it works in folkpunk Anyway I'm quite sure it's not a traditional 'tune', but probably 'composed' by DKM themselves...
It will probably turn up among the stuff that whispers out of the speakers in the corners of a largely deserted local Irish theme pub, where I sometimes go for a cheap Irish stew...
The song was originally written by Woodie Guthrie in the 1930's but was never released by him I believe, so Dropkick took the lyrics and made it their own. It's a fantastic song, you can do so much with it. I love the mandolin and the accordion in it, it's beautiful.

Re: I'm Shipping Up To Boston
Any clue if the tune is also known by the name of a traditional irish tune?
