We would like to record some tunes of our band for a demo CD, medium quality od sound is fine, but we would like to record each of us on a seperate track to correct the balances afterwards - and snip out my mistakes
We have the microphones and a sound mixer with channel ouputs, but we need a recording device. A PC with 4 sound cards??
I think you need a pci audio interface such as http://www.thomann.de/ie/swissonic_inca_28.htm and some virtual studio software such as cubase. You can do this for small money, if you can locate free (or cheap) software. I'm not aware of a device that will work with your mixer audio outputs, but the software will allow you to mix the tracks after recording anyway.
There are some fine dedicated 4- and 8-track recorders that record your sound to hard drive or flash memory cards - some have the CD burner built in, as well.
I have a relatively inexpensive M-Audio Delta card with 8 inputs. The sound quality is great. I've used it to successfuly record multi-track shows with my band. Unfortunately, simply sticking four soundcards in your computer won't work because you have to identify a single input source in your multi-track audio application. I use Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) for recording and mixing, but there are, of course, several to choose from.
At the moment I can't remember the model number (maybe Delta 44?), but it was in the $250 (USA) range. I'll find it tomorrow and post it here, but if I forget, drop me an e-mail to remind me and I'll send it along.
Thanks for all the input.
I think now there are two ways to go either I buy an 8-track recorder or an 8input sound card as mentioned.
I use audacity at the moment, can it handle 8 input recording?
houlberg,
terratec has just two input lines, but might be a good solution for a live two microphone recording situation.
I will use the microphones / pick-ups we have already for the PA system. The goal is not studio quality and cd production
I'm still looking for a 8 line-in (low-cost) card ....

Re: Recording 8 tracks with a PC?
Here is what you do
Buy a Terratec Phase 26 or better
Buy a good condensate microphone
Download/buy a program like FL studio
You need a soundcard that supports ASIO mode in order to avoid latency problems.
and away you go

Re: Recording 8 tracks with a PC?
by the way Terratec Phae 26 is an external USB soundcard and it supports ASIO mode, missed that in my post ;)
