What are you thankful for?

What are you thankful for?

Here in the US, it is the eve before Thanksgiving, a wonderful day where we get together with family and friends, laugh a lot and eat too much, and all without the pressure of finding that perfect gift!

In addition to the other many things I am thankful for in my life, I am thankful for:
1. This very entertaining and useful website.
2. Local sessions, the publicans that sponsor them, and the musicians that haunt them.
3. Being able to play in a band, something I aspired to, but never thought I would achieve.
4. The fact that there are more good tunes than I will ever learn, so I have no fear of running out of new things to do.

What are you thankful for?

Re: What are you thankful for?

Amen to those exepct two and three as I am not in a band and the local sessions are few and far between. I am also thankful for the amount of instrument makers and the ease of comunication via the internet, I doubt I would be playing ITM with out that. The ease of purchasing music, go to Amazon or Ossian type in my card number and in 3 days I got a new CD and I don't even have to move my fat arse to the store.

Re: What are you thankful for?

One of my very favorite holidays, indeed.

1. Same as Al---this is an AWESOME website, and so is everyone on it.
2. Finally coming to my senses and realizing that I can no longer procrastinate on learning to play the fiddle. I've only got one lifetime!
3. My teacher, without whom I likely would have given up after the first week.
4. Friends and family, all of whom haven't a clue about Irish music, but encourage me anyway and let me drag them to the local sessions.

What a maudlin post this is turning out to be. Cue the chick-flick orchestral string score in the background...

Re: What are you thankful for?

My friends who got me into ITM and play, my dog who will actually listen when I play, and my family who just barely puts up with it. Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm thankful that I won't be kept late at work, talking to people from Houston who can never remember time zones, for at least two days this week

Re: What are you thankful for?

I'm thankful that I wasn't born with two heads.

While I was holding the whistle to one mouth, the other head would feel incredibly frustrated.

To be born with two heads and four arms would be asking the moon.

Re: What are you thankful for?

"Sitting back with good company,
Thinking of all the things that I have seen.
I've been to here, I've been to there.
But I ain't going anywhere,

..'cos...

I'm luckier than most,
I sit with my friends and I drink a toast
To the times we've had, the times to come;
Our music's in the sun..."

from 'Times' by Don Jarmey

A great mate of mine, and a song that really sums it up for me here in sunny Brissie. I'm typing this under the guise of 'working from home' while watching the first day of the ashes on telly - it's 31 degrees C with a cool breeze and all's well with the world.

Eno ;-)

P.S. I'm off to the UK next week. Ten degrees? What's that?

Re: What are you thankful for?

-The guy whom gave me a baloney sandwich in 1973 on a Greyhound bus to Detroit from Seattle. The kindness enabled forty two cents in my pocket to stretch the whole trip- and buy hot soup in Lincoln, Nebraska. There's nothing like food to the hungry! A professor of mine later described his joy at finding an unexpected potato while on starvation diet while prisoner of the Nazis. A small thing can be very big.

Re: What are you thankful for?

My mum showing us that playing music isn't just a 'hobby' - more a way of life. She's given up the keyboards and restricts herself to the recorder now she's turned 90. And - I'm thankful she's still alive.

This site -- thanks, Jeremy -- great company all around!...family and good friends -- shared time with each yesterday...music in general, but especially ITM, which has gotten me into more good things (and at times, seemingly more trouble) than I could otherwise imagine.
