Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
Look up the Irish Breakfast Band, based out of Alexandria. Trad tunes, they do some sessions at a local coffee house plus have practices almost every Saturday morning (hence the name). Look up http://www.irishbreakfastband.com/ for info. Sean Dougherty's the main figure in the group, but I think Chuck Moran is also one of the guys "in charge." They're to blame for giving me the ITM bug.
Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
The Virginia/Washington, D.C. area has a wide variety of Irish sessions and CCE events. There seems to be a session at some level just about every night somewhere in the general vicinity. The local CCE has a monthly ceili, and there are other ceilis. The sessions go year round. A lot of the CCE workshops and ceiliis take a break during the summer.
Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
Come visit Charlottesville! Beautiful city and the Blue RIdge Irish Music School offers a lot of class, concerts and so on- also have a great session on Sunday nights.
Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
whaaaaa!!!!! i think there's a spring potomac fiddle weekend, do ya think there's a chance you could go to that? i'm mad i missed the fall one, it sounded like it was a blast
Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
There's another Upper Potomac fiddle weekend in January. I want to go, but I'm going to the piper's weekend and don't think I can afford both. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~updf/fiddle/
Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
Oh, and there are lots of sessions in the Nothern VA/DC area. Here's the one I go to most often:
Sundays from 6:30 to 10ish
O'Faolain's Irish Pub and Restaurant
20921 Davenport Drive Sterling, VA
Phone: (703) 444-9796
Leaders: Jim Wade and Betsy O'Malley
For more info: betsy.omalley@verizon.net
It can be good, depends on who shows up.
I_Fel: I don't know what you're talking about. The Nanny's seisiun hasn't stopped. It still happens every Monday night, tho' it's been starting around 9:30pm or so for the last several months.
Nanny's has reportedly been sold, true, but the new owner also has been reported to be entirely disinterested in changing anything music-wise. There may be a brief period when Nanny's is closed for (much-needed) renovations, but it hasn't happened yet.
In short, rumors of the Nanny's Seisiun's demise have been greatly exaggerated.
ALL THE RUMORS ABOUT NANNY'S CLOSING ARE WRONG. Just got the inside scoop that whatever deal may have been in the works has been stalled by the infamous DC city bureaucracy. Nanny's isn't shutting down, the music isn't stopping, and everyone should come down and play. The end.
Re: Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
To Phantom: It's a bit unclear what is going on. If is has anything to do with the DC liquor board, as JHowley suggested, then any change can be as slow. But everything at the moment is just sepecutation. The neighborhood still loves the place, at least as of the last week in December when I was last there.
Petworth, D.C.: I am in deep, deep mourning for the Nanny's that was.
So, what can you tell us about Bedrock's plans for Nanny's?
Fritz: Well, it's reopening today after a one-day cleaning job. The kitchen is going to be back in gear "soon," says Bedrock founder Geoff Dawson, who adds that the kitchen hasn't changed since he applied for a position at Gallagher's, Nanny's predecessor, a few decades ago.
Mostly, though, what I'm hearing from the Bedrock folks is that they want to keep the good parts of Nanny's -- friendly staff, good music, great pints of Guinness -- and ditch all the negatives, like slow service, the odd smell, etc. As someone who went to Nanny's on his 21st birthday, I'm rooting for them.
Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
Any music around Virginia or Washington DC area???
Hi,
I'll be spending the summer in this area so I was wondering if there are any sessions, classes or Comhaltas/Trad music branches here?
