Ideas for a band name!

Ideas for a band name!

I'd love some ideas for a band name; We play mostly Irish music, and sing a few songs too- Got a name now, but we want one that's a lil more catchy! any ideas?

Re: Ideas for a band name!

There's alway the idea of using trad tune names for band names. I know a couple of groups have used "Toss the Feathers". I like it. Or "The Nine Points of Roguery". "Wheels of the World". So many mysterious and interesting sounding names. Or for a group of females, "The Merry Sisters of Fate".

My own band is called "Craic Wisely", which is kind of silly in my opinion (I didn't think of it), but people seem to like it.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Ottery - you're having a go at my old band aren't you? I'll have you know Spud Rocket was hailed (by at least one person who wasn't my mother) as the best prog Irish trad band in the whole country!

The fact that there were no other irish trad bands in the whole of South Africa does nothing to diminish our illustrious stature.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Back in the heyday of cassettes, I always thought that "Head Cleaner" would have been a great name, you would have sold a lot of tapes by mistake.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

The Craic Heads.

Billy McComiskey also once told me he was surprised no one had ever named a band Clusterfolk.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Matt, as a name, 'The Spud Guns' is on a different intellectual level to 'Spud Rocket'. 'The Spud Guns' is an Irishisation of 'The Sex Pistols', where as 'Spud Rocket' is more redolent of a downmarket Sigue Sigue Sputnik, a squalid band no-one (apart from your Mum, apparently) would want to be associated with....

Ooooh, you didn't just go there! Fair warning, Mark - I'm going to get you for that. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow (although maybe tomorrow at the Herschell), but one day soon...

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Oh yes I would, we should take it outside and I'll show you who's who in Michael Gill's thread, there's a couple of people who look up for a brawl there ...

Re: Ideas for a band name!

How about updating Crazy_fingers' suggestion to "lens cleaner" - or even Len Scleaner?

Re: Ideas for a band name!

"The Dirty Nellies".

I'd go and see you for the name alone.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Aww man I hear a lot of things and think "That would be a great name for a band" like at least once a day...but of course now I can't think of any of them...Some friends and I were Screaming Goose for a while...but that was a bit of an inside joke...hmmm...when I remember some I'll let you know

Re: Ideas for a band name!

I saw a scratch band put together at a festival to replace a band that hadn't turned up. "The cranky old bastards" they were called.
Bet I could fill a dozen such bands with appropriate personnel from these pages.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Oops, got carried away there and forgot what I meant to say. ie. Stand the band in front of a mirror and give the resultant visual mess a name. Works every time.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

How about "U3" or "You Three" or "Yew Tree" short & memorable. Once heard of a band called "Fox Hat" as in who the "Fox Hat", never forgot that name.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

I'm in the midst of a similar dilemma. The group I am in was called "Turas" but we got tired of it because nobody knows what it means or remembers it. And it also sounds a hell of a lot like Solas. And none of us speak Gaelic.

Here are some more suggestions (But if my group uses them yer out of luck!)

Buttery Fipple
The Carolan Tarheels (since we are from North Carolina)

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Over here in Aus you could call yerselves 'For Gough', after a one-time PM ousted by some dirty politics.

Come to think of it, I might have to use that one myself...

Eno ;-)

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Wasn't "Turas" the name of Padraig Rhynne's band back when he was still a teenager. I believe they made at least one recording.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Yeah, "Turas" was definitely already used. I inquired about them a few years ago. Here is a link to the thread:

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Whistleblowers
String, Air & Skin = SAS
The Apple Cores
Then there's always the possibility of some letter juxtaposition such as: 'The Makes of Rallow" or 'Faddy Paheys' - you get my drift.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Stars Above the Garter?
Humours of ________(your neck of the woods)
Kilarney Boys of Pleasure?
Rolling Waves?
Has Banshee or Lilting Banshee been used?- I guess that would only work for girls.....

Re: Ideas for a band name!

If you've seen the film "The Commitments" (albeit about an Irish Soul band) then you'll know all classic band names must have a 'The' in them.

ONe band name they came up with while having the same dilemma was "The Feking Ijits". They didn't use the name so it's up for grabs :)

Re: Ideas for a band name!

I always suggest "The Very Men." Always wanted to be in a band with the name.

Alternatively, maybe ...
Fleadh Circus
The Boo Kelly Bow.
An Beirt agaibh (irish for you two) pronounced "On bert agwiv"

or.. from the Commitments - And and! AND

Re: Ideas for a band name!

I've taken to calling our little band "The Racket Band"
which seems to fit.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Since we play both Irish and Scottish traditional music, we called ourselves "Celtic Gathering," which captures both traditions. This works pretty well, except sometimes we also get asked to do some odd gigs, like play at pagan festivals and other new age-y types of events......
Whatever you do, make it simple, easy to pronounce and easy to remember. And remember, a cute name is cute only the first few items you hear it, so pick something that will stand the test of time.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

We used to have a band called "New Kids On The Mountain". As we grew older we occasionally called ourself "The Old Spice Boys". I do not have any suggestion what we will use for the eternity. "Stiffs of Moher"?

It will never be too late for changing a band name to something that suites better.

Re: Ideas for a band name!

Here are some more ideas that my group has submitted and shot down for various reasons over the past week or so:

Metrognome
The ThingamaJigs
Green Man
Kell's Angels
Feis and Chips
The Gaelic Impostors
Mom, Dad, I'm Gaelic
The Village Meeples (If you play board games this one makes sense)
Dublin Road
The Celtoids
Riverdunce
Riverprance
Maplewood
The Gaelic Pride Men's Chorus

Re: Ideas for a band name!

I play in a little trad irish band. Once in a while, for fun, we would think about names we would call ourselves if we were a Pub Rock band. My favorite as of now is, "Inverted Nipple". :P
