Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
You mught find a good Czek, Romanian or Hungarian NEW if you look on the Net. With their low cost of living a few hundred dollars is a load of cash.
Also Chinese high end are really good value for money.
But if you are going to spend a lot theres a fine maker right there in Ireland, Crehan in Dublin. Some mighty fiddles being crafted there. I think they have a website.
Old fiddles - ahhh you cant nearly find a good one any more and some that sound good are all set-up that way. Mostly rubbish.
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
Once again I find myself unable to work out what uilleanified means. He appears to be saying you can't find a good fiddle anymore and if you find one that sounds good it's only because it's been set up properly!!!!!! However - you can find good old fiddles, and you can get them properly set-up. I'm in the UK so I can't recommend anywhere in Co. Clare, but there's been a lot of discussion here about what to look for in a fiddle and some very good advice given.
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
I have heard amazing things aboy Paul Braddleys fiddle making. He is from Armagh but living in Galway. He also repairs them. I tried to find his web site for you there but it seems to have expired. I am sure someone here has a contact for him though if you want it.
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
Just across the border I suppose but the fiddlemaker/dealer on the quays in Kinvarra has some seriously top class instruments, a lot of classical musicians go there. There was a guy selling stuff during the Willie week, his name is Nigel and he lives in Seafield, Quilty, he had some nice fiddles for sale. Peter O Loughlin (not the flute/fiddleplayer) has a workshop, I think in Crusheen now (he was in Spancil Hill for a while, if I am not mistaken)
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
Crehans have a very big range of fiddles. I bought mine there. If you don't want to go to Dublin, go to Kinvara to the fiddle maker Kuros Torkzadeh. He is a very nice guy and really knows his trade. Here are his telephone numbers:
(091) 637945 and (086) 8127534.
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
Get yourself in contact with Michael Allen. He is a luthier from Co Tipperary. Some of the best players I know got thier fiddles from him, including Martin Murray. I got one from him myself, best purchase I have EVER made, plus he's prices are sound.
He always has a selection but can custom make one for you. Do yourself a favour and contact him
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
Give Peader O'Loughlin (Fiddle Maker not the musician) a ring
087 6030860. Used to live in Spancil Hill but I think he moved to Corofin recently. He has some good stuff for sale usually or maybe he'll make you one if you can afford it.
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
I recently bought a Jim McKillop fiddle, I tried six makers before deciding on Jim including Paul Bradley but nothing compared to it. Definitely give one a go before you make a decision
Re: Where Can I get a really Top-Class Fiddle??Please Help!
Well I think a top-class fiddle most impotantly has to be sweet and have a really good tone not too strong yet not too soft either. I hate those old squeky ones they sound scrachy and awful-not saying that you cant get a good old fiddle but its nearly impossible now days!!
This guy has sound samples of all the fiddles he sells. There are currently about 15 at under £1000. Listen to them. Do any of them sound squeaky, scratchy and awful to you?
Now get somebody else to choose different fiddles from his list, £5000 ones, £600 ones, and you listen to them without knowing which is which. You pick out the ones you think are really top class.

I also recommend Paul Bradley. A good fiddle will typically cost about e800. But they will probably appreciate over time, they're that good.

What is a really top-class fiddle? What would be the attributes of a top-class fiddle in your view Dezi?

OK Therese, how about a little experiment. Go to http://www.westcountryviolins.com/cat--Violins-under-%A31-000--violins.html

Take notes of what you find, and report back.
