Re: Dominant D Fiddle Strings and Wondertone Solo silver E string

Re: Dominant D Fiddle Strings and Wondertone Solo silver E string

I have been wondering whether to get the silver or aluminum Dominant D string when I next need to get new strings. I currently have a silver G, an aluminum D, both dominants. For my A string, I rotate between Aricore and Obligato. Does anyone have any experience with the silver D?
What about the silver E by Pirastro, Wondertone Solo? Thanks.

I use the Wondertone Solo on my fiddle, and I love it. It's got a focused, clear tone (on my fiddle, at least) and I love the sound of it. It's definitely worth a try, I'll never use another type of E.

I use Obligato's with the Silver D string. It gives my fiddle a
nice rich tone. The Obligato A string is the one I always have a problem with. I like the sound but it has about half the life of the other strings. Begins to unravel way before the others need to be replaced.

In my experience the Obligatos give great tone but have a short life. Expensive too! I go through two A strings for every set of strings I use. They should sell sets of strings with two A strings included. Fiddlekit ..thanks for the recommendation on the Wondertone E I'll try one.

Re: Re: Dominant D Fiddle Strings and Wondertone Solo silver E string

I use obligatos with a wondertone E, and I find that the wondertone matches the tone of the obligatos much more than the gold or steel E that comes with the obligatos. I find that the A wears out faster on just about any type of string, since its higher tension and is probably the most played on string. Cant go wrong with that mix for tone, at least on my fiddle.

I favour Thomastik Visions at the mo - seldom a problem with a whistling E and I prefer it to the Wondertone I tried. Never had one unravel and I play them a lot.
