Music books seem to be the 'thing' recently with more bands producing their own tune books.
I recently purchased the Lúnasa tune book Notai and wondered if anyone else had got it yet?
I am only a beginner but like it for the stories about how they got the tunes as much as anything......makes you realise what bands do inbetween tours!
I don't know anything about this book, but it sounds interesting. I take it the book has sheet music of their tunes and songs, along with descriptions? Which CD does it cover, or is it a mix?
I prefer to learn by ear, as I seem to understand the tune better that way, but I have friends who don't play so much ITM that love stuff like this.
I was looking at that but there was no table of contents on the website. Does it have notation for each of the tunes in the Scottish Concerto Strathspey?
Even though learning by ear is preferable this book sounds interesting, as it explains how they picked the tunes, etc. And if you ever want to take a look to remember the tunes, or just to play along with the CDs, it will be useful. I think It's always good to have a book like that so I'll hopefully get it soon.
I have their first book and enjoy it. As far as learning by ear goes I discovered as a poor college student that I could get more tunes for the money by buying books. I aimed to have enough records (vinyl back then) to learn style, inflection, ornamentation and then apply it to what I was reading. Tune contours can be transmitted admirably in print--and indeed have been for a couple centuries. I remember as a trembling teenager, Eugene O'Donnell telling me I needed to learn to read music. And so I did.
The book lays the tunes out track by track so you can play along. Where they play in Eb and other less common keys they provide a version in a more user friendly key!
As there's also the photos and commentary, I've photocopied the music so that the book doesn't get damaged!!
I don't really like learning band sets but it's fun to play along now and again!!

Re: New Lúnasa book
I think that the new book is too expensive especially when you can get most of the tunes on this site
