So, there is a fiddle ornament that some call a treble, a percussive triplet that fills the same amount of time as a quarter note. In addition to playing trebles, somewhere along the line I have picked up the habit of sometimes playing a really fast triplet that covers the same amount of time as an eighth note. This is then followed by a regular eighth note. So basically I am replacing a pair of eighth notes with a 16th note triplet followed by an eighth note. It's kind of like using a treble with an extra note jammed in there somewhere. I find it to be very satisifying, and I am pretty sure I have heard Tommy Peoples and Kevin Burke doing this as well, but I am curious, do any of you fiddlers here do this? Is is unusual? Is it bad?
yep, it's good. Keep it up. And try it on the off beat also, and two back to back - you'll have to learn how to do it DUD as well as UDU for this. (but as with all these trinkets, be careful not to overdo it)
you can crush it or play it clean. I saw Tommy Peoples last week and he was doing both with great control. The other one he's brilliant at is the very short snappy roll that takes the same time. All these are interchangable.
I heard of a lady who had triplets. He small daughter didn't quite understand and when a friend asked her about the babies she replied that her mummy had had giblets. I often play giblets on my fiddle.....
Recently I realized that if I totally relax my right hand and flick my wrist a certain way (visualizing flicking a fly off of it or something), I get these very nice trebles with just a bit of crunch. It happened while playing The Gravel Walks, and it's been getting more consistent.
I'm afraid to analyze it now in case I mess it up or something... I like that they're just happening.
Carzy_fingers, On the original post of this thread, is it 5 notes played in the time value of 3, on a single bow? Or a separately bowed triplet with a (bowed) extra note?
Jim, my original post was talking about 4 notes being played in the space of a quarter noter -- 3 notes played as a triplet covering half a beat, and then a single 8th note covering the other half beat.

Re: fiddlers -- triplet/treble question
Do you mean like a crushed bow triplet where you get a slight crunching sound? One of my favourite types of ornamentation.

Winterowl says he's afraid to analyse in case it messes it up....
I'm the same when I look in the mirror to admire my 'figure of eight' with the bow. I think I'll need to video it to truly appreciate it!
