Re: Paramount Style A Tenor Banjo

I think he means the tone ring. Maybe the resonator.

Re: Paramount Style A Tenor Banjo

Banjo tone rings come in two main styles, flat and arch top. From the player's side of the head, the flat top tone ring isn't very noticeable--it runs around the head right next to the bracket that the flange hooks attach to. An arch top, in contrast, angles in from that perimeter to a high point about 1/2-inch or so toward the center of the ring. So it forms a fairly obvious and smaller circle (beneath the head) within the circle of the bracket.

Re: Paramount Style A Tenor Banjo

Paramount A's are a very good banjo for ITM. I had the pleasure of playing four of them this last weekend at the O'Flaherty Irish Retreat near Dallas. Because they are maple, they tend to be bright, but they are a professional instrument designed by William Lange who also designed the tone rings for the Epiphone Recording Series, Langestyle banjos, Orpheums and Super Orpheums, etc. The signature Lange tone ring is an archtop consisting of a ring supported by a number of plates imbedded in the rim on edge so the ring is only touched in about 20 or so places and the ring is free to vibrate. The result is a distinctive sound favored by many Irish banjo players.

Because of the slightly smaller diameter of the archtop in relation to the rim, the sound tends to be brighter. As long as the neck is intact, the banjo for sale should be a good buy. It won't decrease in value and, compared to modern banjos, is priced well, even for Europe (which tends to sell banjos of that level at about twice the US price) and should make the new owner very happy.

One caveat, I doubt that the head is pigskin since pigskin has a lot of flaws and is not well suited for banjo heads. Most likely it is a Joseph Rogers two or three star calfskin head if it is original and it should be a very good sounding head. If it is a replacement, it might be goat skin but calf is a better bet. Calfskin is thin and easy to work with and had the sonic values that the old banjo players like. Nowadays most people use plastic heads because working with the skin heads is a lot of work (but worth it as I think skin still has the best sound.)
