I have a crack! yes, *shudders* a crack. It's from the e-peg to the g-peg and it's freakin' me out so bad!!!!!!!!!! It's a pretty old violin, and I recently got the a-peg rebushed (there was a crack coming out from it)...the rest of the pegs are pretty big so could that be a factor is causing this lastest crack? is this somthing that can be repaired pretty easily? ahhhh, help me!
If it's any reassurance a good luthier can mend virtually anything, but you need to take it to a fiddle workshop for advice - I'm sure they'll fix it up for you. They should check that the pegs are tapered correctly and the holes are reamed properly - it might be that's where the problem is.
Hottfiddler, I'd be freaking out too if I saw a crack in that area! I'd take the tension of all the strings right down immediately (but leaving enough to keep the bridge in place) to minimise the possibility of a disastrous break across the pegbox, and then I'd hot-foot it to my luthier.
Hello hotfiddler, a crack appeared in the pegbox of my old fiddle, a couple of years back, so I took no chances & headed quickly to a luthier friend of mine in Dublin, James Beatley, & he did a great job on it - it's now 'sound as a pound'!
i am new to this world of irish session music, but i've been told the crack is something everyone wants to have. so, congratulations!
if cracks in the pegbox are a recurring problem, you might make painstakingly sure in the future that strings are never wound right up against the pegbox as they come off the peg toward the nut. the fiddle wasn't designed to translate tension from the strings this way. (if you already knew this bit of info, my apologies. but i thought i'd mention it just in case...)
so I have a crack, am I worrying?

I treat my fiddle like it was my baby. It would go to see Dr. Repair right away.

I wouldn't take any chances with it.
