Hi, I'm aCanadian living near Toronto. I've never been to Ireland, but searching the discussion boards I gather Galway or Clare would be good choices for finding Irish Flute teachers. I'd like to stay for 2 to 3 months starting in January, so cheaper accommodation where I can practice flute (not hostels--I'm 52) is a must (5-600 Euros mo.?). I'm a self-taught intermediate player looking for a teacher to help me clean up my self-taught mistakes. Galway sounds nice--I also like the flute style (eg. Paddy Carty). Thank you in advance for any feedback.
If you're talking about Galway City I don't necessarily know of any specific teachers, but I can give you a possible lead. When I was there a few years ago I took lessons through the Galway School of Irish Traditional Music. I know this no longer exists, but the man that ran it, Mick Crehan, owns the Crane Bar. He always seemed to have his foot very firmly in the door of the ITM scene around town, so if you wander over to the Crane Bar and ask for Mick I suspect he might be able to point you in the direction of a teacher.
Yes Mick Crehan would be a good one to ask. Custy's music shop would be a good one in Clare and it is probably a more reasonable place to stay for accommodation.
Depending what you are after. You could possibly check with the players from touring bands if you want a 'name'. I know some of them teach at workshop events from time to time and have great things to pass on! Some of the Altan and Lunasa members taught in Ballybunnion in the summer.
Their web sites would be the best way to contact them but Mick Crehan might have numbers of individuals to help you out. He has gigs in the pub so will know all the musicians!
Many thanks to Jason G and "westiechick" for taking time to help out. A january flight to Galway City and a couple of pints at the Crane bar sounds like a good start. Thanks guys.
Whoops!--just looked it up--no, it's a flight to Shannon, some time in Ennis, with a stop at Custy's, and then Galway and the Crane Bar. Thanks again guys.
No prob Nick M. Hope you have a great time. You should get good hotel deals at that time of year.
I don't think Galway is ready for the long haul flights yet but great for short hops over to the UK and such!
Big campaign to support Shannon here as the Dub's are trying to steal all the business........some things never change!
Maybe you have already made your mind up. Galway is a thriving lively town with lots of sessions (rather gigs than sessions actually) but if your main interest is learning flute, Belfast has quite a bunch of players and teachers.
Alan Doherty (Grada) is a fantastic flute player and a friendly guy. He's based in Galway AFAIK. Maybe he could be helpful with the tuition.
Near Galway you'll find Eamon Cotter. Flute maker and a superb energic player as well. Contacting him might be helpul.
