any hints for an abc program working under Windows Mobile 5.0 ?
Eventually a midlet Java program. should be able to play abc tunes, dots would be nice, too
I used Skink for a long time http://celticmusic.ca/skink.html and that's a Java application so it might be worth trying (I use ABCNavigator now because it's better at opening large archives)
I have PALMABC running on an old black & white 8 Meg Palm M500
URL http://www.palmabc.ganderband.com/
I have one single abc file with 18,500 abc’s in it which the palm can search blisteringly fast – it’s basic search by actually scrolling through the tunes at high speed (there’s no actual search by characters)
However I can find tunes in only few seconds since they are sorted in alphabetical order
I got the files by downloading everything I could find and then amalgamating into one large abc file (there are loads of duplicates, and different versions of same tune but that makes it more interesting) . Now & again I add some new tunes, resort file (with abcmus), and then send to palm as single new file
More importantly, the PALMABC displays the abc file, can play the file, and display the score (as basic dots) - it isn’t perfect, and can be confusing if there is lots of ornamentation but it works surprisingly well
If you want a copy of my bulk file let me know & I’ll e-mail it to you
There is a version for pocket pc, at
URL http://home.btconnect.com/stevesj/pocketabc/index.htm
But for some reason this version doesn’t allow viewing of scores
I have e-mailed the author, Steve Spencer-Jowett several times with no replies
Also, the program runs at about a tenth of the speed on Pocket pc so I stuck with PALMABC
There is also a pure java version, ABCJ but I don’t understand that so if you have any luck with it please let me know http://www.abcj.ganderband.com/
I don’t think the author intends any further devlopment to the programs
I've now tried the bulk file on my ipaq HX4700 and, like you, found it takes several minutes to load - and searching is hopelessly slow - guess the Windows Mobile is just very slow platform
The same file loaded on palm M505 8Mb does take couple of minutes to load via synch conduit, but then is blisteringly fast to search and use - with the addition of ability to view score as well (the player has a better sound too)
(I have had the same problem with very large contact data files, which used to run very fast on a psion 5MX but hopelessly slow on the Ipaq Pocke PC)
Also I have just tried to run he palmABC software on the Pocket PC using the Palm emulating software 'Styletap', and it does load & run on the IPAQ, but the trouble is, I can't find a way of loading the ABC files since the synch conduits normally used by Palm to load & sync data are not supported on Styletap (anyone know how to do this ??)
So if you want to use very large abc files looks like you need a palm - any one would do, but I would try & get one of the sony clie ones with a colour screen
say the New Sony Clie PEG-NX73V (cost you between £50 & £100 on e-bay), and has a great MP3 player, with built in recorder & camera too)
The good thing is you could keep the Palm PC in your instrument case just for music & not have to worry about losing your more expensive Pocket PC)
Worth noting that Steve Spencer-Jowett has uploaded a new version of PocketABC (V2) that includes score (although I haven't been able to get it to work on my square screen Ipaq :( ).
It is still limited to search and playback of ABC files, but searches are extremely fast and playback is high quality using ABC2MIDI and Timidity MIDI player.

Re: Windows Mobile ABC
I’ve tried Tunepal couple of years ago but found it limited to storing & playing abc’s but no score (dots)
However, reading article at
http://www.comp.dit.ie/bduggan/Research/TunePal%20A%20Portable%20Music%20Archiving%20and%20Retrieval.pdf#search='tunepal'
there is clear intention to improve Tunepal so I will check it out to see if it has improved
If you test it out let me know how you get on

Re: Windows Mobile ABC
Thanks, Enob.
I use a HTC 9600 PDA/Mobile Phone under Windows Mobile 5.0
I've loaded now pocketabc from
http://www.pocketabc.ganderband.com/
It does play and edit abc tunes, but no scores and no influence on the player.
I Guess on my gadget the palm version does not run or is your palm under Windows Mobile, too?

Re: Windows Mobile ABC
My gadget needs about two minutes to load the abc file into the memory

Re: Windows Mobile ABC
FYI: TunePal is now completely free and there is a new version available for Windows Mobile 6.0 penless devices such as the Palm Treo 500v:
http://www.bryanduggan.com/TunePal.html
It is still limited to search and playback of ABC files, but searches are extremely fast and playback is high quality using ABC2MIDI and Timidity MIDI player.
