Re: ELECTRO or ACOUSTIC on stage

What stage is it? What are the acoustics of the room? Will your acoustic be unamplified?

Re: ELECTRO or ACOUSTIC on stage

The venue is a moderately sized church hall, There will be all the necassary equipment in the venue due to irish band 'the wild irish'are the headliners with Brian Patton (another electric player). Last time i played a gig i used my accoustic amlified and that can be arranged again.
P.S Im a slow typer.

Re: ELECTRO or ACOUSTIC on stage

Play the acoustic instrument, but do it in front of a mic. As long as you don't move around a lot, a good vocal mic will add some fullness to your volume, and allow your audience to get the more natural feel of a real fiddle.

Re: ELECTRO or ACOUSTIC on stage

I recently played in a church hall on my German acoustic with a vocal mic. The tone of the violin is good anyway and it sounded fine through the mic, although staying close enough was a challenge. I have a poorer quality acoustic which is improved by playing with a pick-up and makes it easier to move and look around without losing the mic or knocking it over. An electric violin also sounds good, but you do lose some of the traditional tone and depth, unless your magic stomp can compensate for that. In the end it probably comes down to personal preference.

Re: ELECTRO or ACOUSTIC on stage

My first impression: If you are playing with a loud band, use the electric. If you are playing solo, use the acoustic. (Ashokan Farewell is the kind of tune that really needs the acoustic fiddle, I think.)

But maybe the best advice is to use the fiddle that you feel most comfortable with. Feeling confident about your playing is probably the most important thing.

Re: ELECTRO or ACOUSTIC on stage

p.s. If you use one of the vocal mics, have someone tweak the tone controls. Singers typically want a lot of treble in the tone, and acoustic fiddle does not need a lot of extra high frequency. Good luck, and have fun with it.
