What's everyones 5 favourite trad albums of all time?
Kicking off with mine in no particular order...
High Part of the Road - Tommy Peoples
Planxty - Planxty (Black album)
Zoe Conway - Zoe Conway
The Lonesome Touch - Martin Hayes & Denis Cahill
Bothy Band - Bothy Band (1975)
I spend a lot of time pondering this question and my answer changes from day to day, even hour to hour. But if you are to ask me today (which you are)...
Also in no particular order:
At first Light - Mike McGoldrick & John Mc Sherry
Skin & Bow - Declan Folen & Junior Davy
Fused - Mike Mc Goldrick
Lonesome Touch - Martin Hayes & DC
..............
..............
At the moment I can't think of a 5th......
Callan Bridge - Niall and Cillian Vallely perhaps?
I will change my mind again soon, so I better just post this quick and let the rest of ye get on with it!
If you do a search for this question you will get alarming results as to how often it has been asked but never mind. Here goes (for now - and not in order):
1. First Harvest - Iain MacDonald and Iain McFarlane
2. Either of the albums by Daimh
3. Delirium - Capercaillie
4. Handful of Earth - Dick Gaughan
5. Up South - Fred Morrison and Jamie McMenemy
Sorry there are no Irish albums in this list - That is not by design. These are all great albums.
Other top albums would include Wayward Son by John Doyle, Mar a tha mo chridhe by Julie Fowlis, Luminosity by Back of the Moon, Welcome Home Kind Stranger by Paul Brady, And Irvine and Paul Brady. The list goes on. It also depends if you are limiting it to a tunes album/a song album or a mix.
One to look out for later this month will be Kris Drever's new album. If it is anything like it is being billed then it will probably end up being quoted as a standard for years to come.
Ah fair enough... I guess I missed that one. Such a captivating thread title too. I really should spend more time on this board and less devoted to my studies.
aaaannd..... er...
oh, what other albums?? well, there's a whole lot- lemme say that much!!!
how about;
"The Celtic Fiddle Festival", back when Johnny was playing with them- he was so amazing....:( but I also really like some of Lunasa's albums, I just don't find them quite as... I dunno, they just don't seem as real as some of the other cds and stuff. I enjoy seeing them live in concert much more.
Some all time favorites include:
Arcady--Many Happy Returns
Deanta--(Can't remember the name but there was a feather on the cover)
John McCusker--Yella Hoose
And a couple of current favorites:
The new Le Vent Du Nord album (I am terrible with names, sorry)
The new Donal Clancy guitar album (just came out on Compass records)
Kheelch, that was just Our Mr. Gill being his usual self. Ignore him.
If i had to pick all-time favorites, which is a bit tough because my favorites vary rather a lot, I'd have to say:
Kevin Burke, If The Cap Fits
Celtic Fiddle Festival, Encore
Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Live In Seattle
Then from there it gets messy and they start fighting for which ones would rank fourth and fifth. ;) And next week the list might be different because in the meantime I'd pulled out something I hadn't listened to for a while and rediscovered how wonderful it was.
The High Level Ranters, "High Level", mainly Northumbrian trad,
"Flook" Live,
Phil Cunningham, "Airs And Graces", Scottish, mainly self-composed,
Moya Brennan, "Perfect Time", one of her solo albums,
Kathryn Tickell's first one, "On Kielderside"
Lunasa- Redwood
Danu- All Things Considered
Bohola- 4
Dervish- Playing With Fire
Teada- Teada, but I really like the new one Inne Amarach and haven't had it long enough to give it fair judgement.
This is of course a rather random choice. There are many great albums.
1) Bothy Band 1975
2) Planxty - the black album
3) Lunasa - Lunasa
4) Shantalla - Shantalla
5) "Irish jigs" by Hutchinson, Hymas and Harris
Altan - Harvest Storm
Music at Matt Molloy's
Bothy Band - 1975
Arcady - Many Happy Returns
Jesse Smith's first recording which was a cassette never printed as a CD. Unfortunately, I lost it many years ago.
Peter Horan and Fred Finn - Music of Sligo
Music From the Coleman Country
Joe Cooley - Cooley
A Crowd of Bold Sharemen
Rufus Guinchard - Newfoundland Fiddler
I haven't heard it enough to cement it on the list, but I'm strongly suspicious that Donncha O'Briain's album belongs up there as well....
Okay - this is based on where I turn when I need some inspration; either style, technique or just plain 'g'wan ye'
Martin Byrnes - Masters of Irish Music
Sean Smyth - The Blue Fiddle
Brian Rooney - The Godfather
Various - Across the Waters (ITM from England)
Frankie Gavin - Irlande
solas - solas
black velvet - black velvet
the road less traveled - danu
the lark in the morning - steeleye span
a parcel of rouges - steeleye span
steeleye span rock!! actually, they folk rock!!

Re: Top 5 albums
Come on you're missing the point. The music is ONLY to be enjoyed live. Unless of course you like museum show pieces or something like that.

I'm being sarcastic based on a comment I received on a recent thread I started called "tune".

Re: Top 5 albums
Interesting variety and almost no consensus so far - guess that's a healthy sign! No "Best ofs" though, that's cheating

Re: Top 5 albums
Paddy Carty - the banjo one,
Sileas -Play on Light. (OK - "near-ItM")
King of the Pipers - What a good call!
Wooden Flute Obsession Vol. II.
The playing isnt uniformly as strong as on the first one but I like it more.
And just to annoy the knee-jerkers, I'll say Flook! - Rubai.
What do I win?

- All for their associations.

Re: Top 5 albums
Dick Gaughan - Handful of Earth
Silly Wizard - Live
Martin Byrnes - Masters of Irish Music
After that it's just too hard to choose. Plus there are so many I haven't even heard. There is probably no good answer to this question anyway!
