What to do in Dublin this christmas?

What to do in Dublin this christmas?

I will be visiting Dublin for my second time this christmas (27-30 dec.) and are wondering if someone has some good suggestion of were to go for some live tradtional music. Last time (only one night) I visited O'Donnoghues and it was great. I will not bring any instruments, just listening.

I will be staying around Temple bar and I will prefer to visit places like O'Donnoghues with "join-in" sessions. I've heared about Cobblestone is that a good place to go? You have ofcourse temple bar and gogartys, but these are more like gigs is'nt it?

I know the session link here, but don't know the streets in dublin so I like to hear some suggestions in the city centre.

If you know about any concerts (TRADITIONAL) about that time aswell I'm glad to hear from you.

You should certainly visit Hughes which is just off the Quays beside the Motor Tax Office, (Luas line runs outside it).
There are sessions there most nights with Friday being nice in the snug . Its a pipers Club session but everyone welcome to join in. Cobblestone is nice too, not sure of nights and sometimes its okay to join, others not so welcoming.
Then there is the Merchant on the South side of the Quays not too far from Hughes. I'm sure some other Irish members of the site will have more ideas for you.

If your willing to go a little out of town, Kiely's in Donnybrook, I've heard has a good session on Thursday nights but I've never been so cannot really comment on it. In Monkstown, your guaranteed good trad music in the Culthurlann na hEireann on Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays in a good atmosphere and nice people too. Although they may not have a session on the week which Christmas falls on so I'm not so sure whether its your best bet.

Christy Moore and Declan Sinnott are playing in Vicar Street on the 27th and 28th - you could do a lot worse!

Re: What to do in Dublin this christmas?

Again, if you are staying in Temple Bar your best bet would be Hughes and the Cobblestone and Merchant, all within walking distance. You have been in Dublin before so will know that our sessions start later in Ireland than other places. I was in Canada recently and went to a "gig" session in Vancouver and was stunned to see the musicians packing up at 11.30. We only start in our local session at 10.30 but different strokes for different folks. Anyway enjoy your trip to Dublin

Re: What to do in Dublin this christmas?

The pipers club on Henrietta street is wicked, they always have some really good recitals, and coming up to Christmas it should be busy.
Also the Comhaltas headquaters in Monkstown, i have heard the best music in that place!
good luck

Re: What to do in Dublin this christmas?

I had a couple of good nights with work colleagues last year in the Brazen Head (Bridgefoot Street I think it is, across from the Merchant), nightly and more or less all day Sunday, songs and tunes. Nearby there's a (mainly singing) session in Nash's (corner of Thomas Street and Meath Street) on Sunday afternoon where the old resident group from Mother Redcaps now play--they also play in the Pale on Tuesdays. I was told there is now sessions in the Lord Edward and Darky Kelly's, also nearby, but haven't checked them out.

Re: What to do in Dublin this christmas?

Found Brazen Head v disappointing. Guitar player fiddled with the sound system for 45 minutes then banjo guitar and electric fiddle group played. Electric fiddle not pleasant. No joining in.
Sundays: Pier Hotel, West Pier, Howth, group of friendly folk have a session starting at 1, also impressive market am.
