A bandmember came to me with $250 tickets to Ireland, plus invitations to visit people and a list of places to stay... in January! So the middle of next month (jeepers!) I'm off to Ireland for the very first time.
Help!
I'm taking any and all suggestions on places to visit, people to see, things to pack. I already printed off the list of sessions, but I don't even know which towns we'll be in yet!!! (Though I must say I'm pushing for East Clare.......) I just can't believe my good luck and I thought you all would be the best to ask, since it's such short notice...
see if you can get to galway - loads of tunes and brilliant musicians and session all day every day of the week - The people are really friendly as well and in galway youre very close to clare - about 40 min drive to ennis and also conemara (still cant spell it and i lived there for about 2 months!! shocking!) which is well worth a visit. Take lots of warm clothes as its bloody freezing over the wesht at that time - it doesnt snow much but it rains and sleats all the time and its that bitter damp cold that goes straight to your bones.
Beware events billed as sessions, Kira, as many are booked bands creating 'session' ambience for the tourists. Having said that, in dead of winter, the place isn't overun with furriners.
I ended up going to a series of 'sessions', but wasn't welcome to join the musicians, until one time in Doolin, when a more inclusive fiddler let me sit in. I was so impressed with his playing that I bought the tape they were flogging behind the bar. I remember his name now, one Tommy Peoples.
Thanks for the help guys, and I'll definitely check out that other discussion, if I end up going... I guess I was right not to believe my good luck, she didn't have the tickets yet and now it seems we probably won't get them. :( :( But I'll keep planning for the next time, and thanks for your help... and what a great story, Skipjack!!! That right there makes it worth shooting for again...
