Does anyone know where to get Cape Breton Island CDs in the United States? All I've found so far are the more popular CDs of Natalie Macmaster. I want to find, if possible, some source in the United States that would either have or be able to order the CDs that are less common in the United States, or by artists that are not very well known to the general public. Thanks.
If you are able to get WUMB (I think it's available through the Internet), Downeast Ceilidh is a great program for people who like Cape Breton music. You could try emailing Marcia Palmater about CD's in the USA, but she'll probably recommend Cranford!
I've picked up various Rounder CDs on Amazon, often for good prices used. Those are by and large old school, or whatever you want to call it. The previous generation.
If you're within screaming distance of Seattle, try Dusty Strings. They used to have a decent selection. If you're not close by, you could try their website:
Unfortunately they don't have their CD collection on the website, but they operate on a "call us and see what we have in stock" basis and they ship pretty promptly.
To be honest I have never purchased a product from them but their website has a good selection from Atlantic Canada.
On another note Downeast Ceilidh is the best hour on radio (for fans of music from Atlantic Canada) and the five hours before are even better (Celtic Twilight-celtic trad. mix).
In reference to Colin's mention of "themusicmeister.com", I've been to the retail store on several occasions, and the guy that runs it is really into the Cape Breton stuff. I've never actually picked his brain about more obscure Cape Breton musicians, but I'm sure he could help you out.
My post never made it through the ether last night, so here goes again.
I'll second the recommendation for Paul Cranford; he's a gentleman and scholar and a great resource.
Cape Breton pianist Tracey Dares and her piper husband Paul MacNeil have a good selection of Cape Breton recordings available through their website, www.castlebaymusic.com, and I've had very good experiences doing business with them.
Portland America used to be a really good source for Cape Breton and Scottish recordings. The original owner sold it a few years back, and the new owners have rechristened it "CelticMusicUSA". They do wholesale and individual mail order at www.celticmusicusa.com . The site's a bit funky in terms of navigation, but they still appear to have a pretty good selection of recordings. I haven't done business with them under the new ownership though, so can't vouch for them.
These days, more and more of the Cape Bretoners are selling things directly through their web sites.

This guy is actually in Cape Breton (not in the States, not sure if or why that matters):
http://www.cranfordpub.com/
I've purchased several CDs from there. Service is good. You can probably write him for recommendations of lesser-known musicians.

I just checked Elderly Instruments and they have several recordings. (Lots of good Irish music too.)

Re: Cape Breton CDs in the United States
I stocked up while I was in Cape Breton this past summer
This store isn't in the US, but it looks like you can order online from Charlies (the store that I found the best selection from..).
